Novel Recommendations

I would like to buy some novels. I tend to like John Grisham / Nelson DeMille style thrillers. I tend not to like fantasy books (particularly Terry Pratchett!)

Any suggestions, new or old?

Thanks,

Nick

If you like this type of novel I recomend you Henning Mankell and his books about inspector Wallander althou the first book of this saga is not as good as the ones that follows, I mean is a little bit ligth.
There is also Elizabeth George and her books of Inspector Sir Linley fron Scotland Yard.

I'm reading at the moment "Fight Club", if you haven't seen the film it's great

There is a book of this film??? ( El club de la lucha??), didn't know it and I liked a lot the film. Normally books are better then the films so it would be an option.

Glue or Trainspotting by Irivine Welsh

Excellent read once you get used to the style of language. It reads pretty much phonetically in Edinburgh slang. Think it was nominated for booker prize and is genius compared to the movie.

By his own admission Irvine Welsh says that the 'style of language' i.e. the Edinburgh slang is redundant/unnessacary.

Haha... exactly what i thought when i read it. Pretentious crap to the extreme. He asked his father what he thought who replied with something like... "Can't understand a word. We don't learn English like that in schools do we ken?"

Class... in more ways than one ;)

Try The Dark Metals trilogy by Phillip Pulman. Fantasy but fantastic

The Shadow Of The Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. An excellent mystery story translated from Spanish and set in Barcelona in the years after WW2.

I couldn't put it down, its that good.

I can't belive it! Ruiz Zafon recomended in an english forum 8O 8O

on an Ibiza chat board admittedly.

I'm surprised Ruiz Zafon is recommended on here, Ibiza or english forum, doesn't mind, cos he is not our best writer, while in two years I never heard anyone talking about none of our best writers or southamericans ones. ;)

The book was really strongly recommended in a lot of English bookshops and even on daytime television.

Has he written any other books?

Mikkak, the film was based on this book, by author Chuck Palahnuik - he has written quite a few books and they are all twisted and funny. I have heard the 'Survivor' is the best one, but I haven't read it yet :)

Good to know it, another one to my list, thanks :D

I'm pretty addicted to Ian Rankin's Rebus novels at the moment. But read them in sequence. You can read them out of sequence but they work much better as a series.
