After all the hype and promises of something new following the move from Pure Pacha; we had to check out Pete Tong and Andy Cato at Eden last Friday night.
Eden as a venue is actually not a bad club; vainglorious pictures of Pete adorning the walls aside. The first inlking we got that all was not as it should be was when we saw a crowd of stags in matching 'boys on tour' T shirts. There was little sign that any of Pete's other fans from Pacha were there - instead of an International crowd the gathering was Billy Britain at his worst. Sartorially challenged and content with the commercial thud of chart topping house.
Sure that Andy Cato (you were one of my heroes - what happened ?) would deliver we searched out the back room. Initially it was promising - he dropped Superstylin' and I thought the night was saved. However, after that Cato delivered a set that was perfunctory at best; bored and disinterested at worst. We shuffled around in the smoky half light hoping that he would read the crowd and pick things up. He clearly sensed the crowd were lethargic but didn't have the imagination to do anything other than drop Superstylin' again. Great track but somewhat lacking in impact having been played a mere 45 minutes previously.
To be fair to Pete, we didn't stick around to hear what he had to play. Given that his set was only going to be an hour and a half long (and it was going to take him a significant proportion of this to generate any kind of crowd atmosphere) we decided to cut our losses and leave.
If there are other clubbers out there who are curious to try Eden I would say this to you - I would rather scoop my head out with a blunt spoon. No doubt Eden will be busy because of it's location in San An. However, for anyone that likes a decent tune, the line up at Pure Pacha this season is awesome. They have clearly shown that Friday nights were by no means a one man show - in fact on some nights you will be stuck for choice (Basement Jaxx AND Oakenfold anyone?!!)
Pete, you're still a legend, but (for the time being at least) the new night has definitely gone a bit Pete Tong.
