I'm not too crazy about Venice, either. Only nice thing is that there are no cars.
Middle parts of Italy (Tuscany, Umbria) are the nicest imo. Rent a car, stay at b&b or vineyards, enjoy the food and the scenery. Ahhhh.... 8)
Or if you want the beach go to Cinque Terra on the west coast.

If your looking for something a little further afield, I went to Rio de Janeiro and surrounding areas in November. Best holiday I ever had.
Spent 5 days on an island called Ihla Grande which is about 2 hours south of Rio. The island has amazing beaches, no cars and is basically a tropical rainforest mixed with stunning beaches. Very relaxing.
Loved Rio too and its beach lifestyle.

My boss went to Sardinia last year - now that looked gorgeous, hankering for a visit there myself for a "quiet" week away sometime this year....8)
