Greetings party people,

A bit of advice please from anyone who has been to the big apple. I am going in August for a few days with my girlfriend.

Any advice on hotels (preferably near Broadway / Times square) also any advice on Broadway shows worth catching?

Any help is much appreciated :D

don't stay in broadway/midtown, you'll get better value for money elsewhere and the subway is v. reliable and easy to use.

somewhere like flatiron, gramercy, might be ok.

Hey Rob

Thats where I stayed the last time i went! Although i did it on a shoestring and stayed in the nasty hostel section at the back...big mistake! 1 room with about 20 travellers...

Did you stay in the 'normal' hotel? if so what was it like. I gotta agree, the location was fantastic..

We are going for 3 days and then driving to Charlotte, North Carolina to visit a friend. We will probably stop overnight in transit and spend the day in Washington, Philadelphia or somewhere..not sure where yet.

We stayed in a double room. It was nice. You had your own en suite bathroom and it was clean. The rooms where slightly basic but Im not that fussed by fancy Hotels as I dont really want to be spending that much time in the room anyway.

Another place i stayed that was similar was http://starhotelny.com/index.php
its pretty much the same as the gershwin but the other side of the Empire state on 8th ave right opposite Madison SQ.

We stayed here two years ago http://www.doubletree.com/en/dt/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=NYCDTDT
We booked with lots of months in advance and we got a very reasonable price (about 100€/night).
IMO best you can do is to check hotels.com or similar and look at the best rates and then check tripadvisor.

We visited the Meatpacking District which was very interesting, loads of old warehouses and very very cool shops around

Now it looks like there's much more shops and restaurants, tho

There are thousands of options in NYC- assuming you want Manhattan, give some idea of your price range/standards/etc. Same with Broadway/other activities- do you prefer musicals, drama, avant-garde?

We went over Easter and stayed at the Quality Hotel Times Sq, it literally is just next to Times Sq and has really reasonable prices, fantastic rooms with lovely bathrooms too. I highly recommend this place - we went all over the North East USA and this was probably the best all round decent hotels we stayed in :D

You pipped me to the post with that one....

Thanks for the advice people, looking at one called the Casablanca?? Voted #2 on tripadvisor hotels for NY..little bit pricey, but only staying for 3 nights isn't too bad.
