is that why i can see it on everyone else, why do we all need a green light to say were online too??, surely we can tell that by the bottom and the fact that the message appears

I think that its there so if you are reading a thread you can tell which of the posters is still online if you want to reply to their post.
I might be wrong though

well someone up the top of the thread might not be online any more so if you wanted an instant PM then you might wait until they are online or contact them some other way
