friends have been converted to "follows": people you follow or who follow you. i don't have any friends (on the board!) so can't test this, perhaps someone else can?

I'm liking the new format a lot so far!
The right column is particularly useful. The Recent Activity column for a quick glance at the latest posts. Users online right there instead of having to click through to it. Post count, which is actually kind of frightening in my case
There's a small learning curve in figuring out how to do things you got used to doing another way - eg. to go to the most recent posts in a thread (as noted above, by clicking on the date under the name of the most recent reply)
But once you get the hang of it, it seems to be a lot more powerful software.

If you click on someone's name on a post, it no longer takes you to their profile page. Instead, a little box pops up with basic information including "member since" (as well as a link to their profile page)Did "member since" line disappear? Was interesting to see how many years (decades) some people been on here

How come Icey is now a "New Member" ? 
I thought maybe one only becomes "Active" after 5 years .... but this doesn't hang together either looking at above. It's all beyond my understanding ! Beginning to seem more "facef***-esque" the more you look .... with the "follow" thing looking like a **itter feature.
Keeping an open mind as we humans are often averse to change but I'm still not liking the new format much. The whole thing somehow feels more 'distanced' and impersonal but maybe that'll change. I'm sure the self-promoting types will have great fun with the "popularity, rank and positioning" features (forum or Summer Camp ?).
To me these sorts of features on a forum kind of act as a distraction from the content side of things. The 'like' thing on posts especially reminds me of a move to 'opinion by trend' rather than letting people read stuff and think for themselves without taking into account how many others agree.. actually a potential hindrance to independent thought. Hey ho. Facebook and Twitter have a lot to answer for.

It could reduce the number of short replies with smiley faces and words of agreement

seems like us users first have to get used to it.
i for one like it and it's just the way the world works right now. to me it's definitely the best forum version we ever had.

It certainly has more features but it seems over-complicated now and not working as well that's all. A bit like a new merc versus the old ones - if you know what I mean by that ! The world may go one way and eventually most people follow but you still remember back to when things were simpler and easier to follow without all the clutter - just reliable and straightforward. It just seems too gimmicky and you have to refresh every time to see if you actually posted etc. The new features seem to have come at the expense of some of the basic good functionality.

Loving the new forum!
Issue: when posting from iPad I don't get a message that the post has been made and the post doesn't show in the thread. So I press it again and then it says you have double posted - so that means the first post is actually made you're just not informed of it. This is all from quick reply.
