My Ibiza Story (July 21-27)

PRELUDE:

We booked our flights with Monarch

Our flight wasn't until 10pm from Manchester,

the most miserable flight to Ibiza they had ever been on. Poor form Monarch...

That Monarch flight out of Manchester is a real killer. Did it in 2010, never again (it was a freeby though).

Sorry for the delay: Here is the final instalment -

Thursday 26th

We awoke after a good 7 hours sleep, all feeling pretty awful, having a decent sleep after a few nights getting only a few hours really messes with your body, we were all really tired but made our way out for some breakfast at about 11 (no prizes for guessing where we went) ate that then purchased our tickets for CREAM (the night we had planned our holiday dates around) from ibiza rocks.
We then headed over to Ocean Beach Club at about midday as we wanted to get a full day of it (we knew that the pool party wouldn't kick off for a few hours) We arrived to a small que, however it took about 30 minutes to get in. Once we got to the door we were told it was 15Euros to get in even though the flyer we had said 10. Then we were told that a bed would be 20 Euros today, bloody scandalous, again I would have done without but the lads wanted one, so I went along. We settled down for a couple of hours sunbathing before the party got going. It didn't, a couple of hours turned into a few, there was a DJ spinning pretty much all day but nothing ‘party like' was happening. We sipped a few drinks whilst taking the occasional dip in the pool, had a chat with the ‘ibiza angels' massage girls, one of them who wad Danish told me I looked the spitting image of a Danish TV personality, she showed me a picture later on in the day and quite frankly I was offended :/ At about 5 o'clock there was a very sudden cover of cloud, didn't look like the sun was going to come back out again that day. Then Thunder, a few flashes of lightening, and then the heavens opened, it absolutely hammered down with rain, however this was the que to get the party started. Everyone started going mental, raving in the rain, in the pool, diving, backflips, throwing each other about, it suddenly turned into an awesome party. Pritchard from Dirty Sanchez turned up (im led to believe he pretty much lives in Ibiza these days) he was at the heart of the antics (seen him a couple of years ago at J.S going mental so knew what was in store) these antics continued for as long as the rain did, I couldn't tell you times, everyone was going pretty sick. The rain stopped but the tunes continued, everyone was still loving it, albeit not acting so crazy anymore, just dancing in and around he pool, I had a brief pause when Avicii – Levels was dropped, (Id have that song banned if I could) and we must have stayed there until 8pm ish.
We headed back to the hotel for a quick change then out to grab a bite to eat before the drinking would continue. Straight up to the boozer to see John, I knew that letting him no it was out last night would result in a few free drinks, and it did. A couple of cocktails and a few shots were thrown our way, followed by our own drinks, the odd coronita and a couple of jugs of cocktails. ‘A' & ‘J' were abusing the vodka redbulls and were noticeably more drunk than I was when we left around midnight, saying that I was still feeling pretty tipsy. We jumped on the amnesia bus and arrived at Cream around 12.30. It was more or less empty when we arrived but Rob H was doing the warm up set, being regular visitors to cream we headed down at that time to support him and give his set a listen. As expected it was a very good warmup set, it built steadily with the crowd, the atmosphere from early on was a good one, no knobheads in there, not that I could see anyway. Some girl doing some suspect dancing on her back being the only irregularity of notice, this obviously didn't last long as the club filled there was just no room for this ridiculous behaviour. About 1.00 I decided to consume my first rockstars of the night (not going out the previous night meant I had 4 left, I decided I was going to do them all) and had 2  Rob H played for 1hr45 minutes as Gareth Emerys flight had been delayed and he didn't arrive until then. As Rob H dropped ‘Mark Eteson – Together' near the end of his set I could feel myself coming up quickly. Emery took over at 1.45, ill say this now, it would probably have been better if his flight was cancelled. He turned up late (therefore taking 30 minutes off Paul Van Dyks set) and played the most average set you could possibly imagine, I've seen him a few times this year, and he played the same tunes he had played in those sets, in a not so dissimilar order, very poor form. He clearly hadn't made any effort (think he's getting to big for his boots these days now he's ‘made it to the big time') Not even my double dose could enhance the performance, he dropped ‘concrete angel' & ‘on a good day' which I cant help but go a mental to (also dropped Language but a short edit of it) but all in all it was the same cheesy crap hes been playing for a while now. AN ELLIE GOULDING REMIX thrown in, are you f*cking kidding me, at Cream!!!! I was mightily disappointed with him, infact couldn't wait for his set to end. He started at about 128bpm and couldn't have ended much higher than 132. So much for set progression, especially when your on before PVD who will immediately smash it.
Anyway to my relief emery ended, I could see he was asking for 5 more minutes to drop another tune, but PVD's people clearly told him NO!!!and rightly so…
PVD took over (ill make the point now that he is, always has been, and probably always will be my favourite DJ) a little intro to his set built the crowd up, then as it dropped and the first cannon blast of the night went off, the place went crazy. He smashed it from the very start, immediately taking my hit from my double dose off the charts. Dropping tune after tune the crowd was loving it. 2 points ill make however, I know the island is quieter this year than my previous trips, but only properly noticed it this night, I actually had room to dance in the middle of the dancefloor at cream, its usually packed in like sardines, secondly I know it gets hot in there but OMG it was ridiculous this year, Ive never sweated so much in my entire life, unbelievable.
After about 45 minutes of his set PVD dropped his live edit of ‘for an angel' my all time favourite, it was awesome, the breakdown went on for what seemed like about 5 minutes, I was in euphoric heaven, hands in the air, air piano all the way  a few other tunes of note that he dropped where his collab with Arty ‘The Ocean' it's a bit of a masterpiece and I got a quality video of it in its entirety, also his remix of Rea Garvey ‘Cant Stand the silence' a right vocal smasher. After consuming another rockstar, and then the other in the space of about 30 minutes I was really on top of the world now. PVD was the first DJ I ever seen at Cream Ibiza so seeing him there again really was special for me. One of the highlights was when he dropped a remix of ‘Liquid Child – Diving Faces' an all time classic ill sure youll agree, a moment ill never forget.
With about 30 minutes left of his set I decided to have a quick break from the dancefloor and went and stood by the bar to cool off. Stood there for just a couple of minutes, when Annabell (the girl I met in J.S) walked right past me, after a double take she recognised me and we stood and chatted for a few minutes, she told me where she and her mates where stood and to come and find her a bit later. Going back into the masses to find my mates they had also moved out of the crowd, and it turned out right by her and her mates, so we continued our convo, proper lovely girl we spoke for ages. PVD ended his set with ‘Home' and me and ‘A' had a good sing to that it, it was truly an incredible set, so many tunes I could name, it was by far the set of the holiday.
Guiseppe Ottaviani was on next, another one of my favourite acts. He smashed it from the start, though I had to spend about 5 minutes explaining to annabells mate that he was a Live Act rather than a DJ, after she asked me why he wasn't wearing big headphones??. Sigh… 
We continued to dance and chat/talk sh*t (about numerous topics, including her having to leave ASOT early on the Monday as her mate had a fit after her drink was spiked, seriously bad times, and the fact we were both going to creamfields) as Ottaviani smashed the main room, having a little sing along when he dropped his remix of Emerys ‘Sanctuary'. Before she headed off back to her hotel we exchanged numbers and planned to meet up at Creamfields, where we will both be in a couple of weeks. I headed back to the dancefloor where I met a few people who were on the Driftwood Boat party, had a quick chat with a couple of them. Ottaviani then dropped his tune ‘Through You Eyes' this was a standout moment for me in a previous visit to Cream Ibiza, so I had a bit of an emotional moment to myself, epic emotional trance. We stayed until 6.45 when his set ended and my Ibiza clubbing was over for another year, it was a truly brilliant night. Raved seriously hard, sweated like you wouldn't believe, loved it!!. I always forget just how good that ice cannon is in the main room, cools you off momentarily, and provides something different which sends the crowd into a frenzy whenever it goes off.
We came out of Amnesia to find the San Antonio bus waiting for us again, so jumped on that and headed home, spoke to the lad who DJ'd at the driftwood pre party and his girlfriend who he was on holiday with, nice lad, listened as some complete wreck head tried to give him some bedroom tips for when they got back to their hotel, seriously cringeworthy stuff, but funny at the same time.
Hopped off the bus, bought some water and headed back to the hotel, it was 7.45 when we arrived back, the latest we had been back on all of our nights

Friday 27th

We were awoken by reception hammering on our door at 11.45 telling us we had to be out by 12, which we already knew. Seriously though there was no need for the ferocity he smashing the door with, must have woken up half the hotel. We jumped up showered and did some last minute packing. We put our cases in the safe room and then pondered what to do for the day (our flight wasn't until 3am the following morning). Headed out for breakfast, then went up to the boozer to use the free wifi that was available there (I had to make a few payments etc etc bla bla boring boring) We decided just to spent the day by the pool, so went back to the hotel afterwards, having had very little sleep the previous night it wasn't long before I dozed off, terrible idea as I hadn't put any sun cream on, needless to say I burnt pretty badly. Woke up realising what id done and waited for inevitable pain to begin. We stayed by the pool till late then headed out for some food, I wanted to go to curry club but the lads weren't to keen on that idea. We ate then headed round to mambo to watch the sunset as I told the others its something you have to do during your trip. We got there and it was filling up nicely, this was the point where the realisation hit that we were going home, I immediately started to feel suicidal, there is nothing worse than having to face the realisation of leaving Ibiza. The sunset was cut short anyway by some horrific clouds that came in from no where, so we moved to the benches right infront of mambo so we could hear the tunes, and waited for pete tong to come on, he was supposedly on at 9, however it was 9.45 and he still wasn't on so we decided to head back, walked right past him on the way up the street next to mambo, I was going to stop and ask for a picture but iv heard he can be a bit funny with people doing that so decided against it. We went in a few shops as I wanted to buy a tshirt but couldn't see any I liked so we headed back to the hotel to get our cases. Picked them up and went and waited for the bus to the airport, the most depressing wait ever, watching everyone walk by all off on their nights out and we were going home, I could have cried..
We grabbed some food and sat about in the airport for what seemed like an eternity, inevitably our flight was delayed, only by 30 minutes but that was nearly enough to push me over the edge, not what you need at 3.30 in the morning.
BTW what is with the David Guetta bar in the departure lounge?? There was some serious chart cheese coming out of there as we boarded our flight, however the last song we heard before we boarded was ‘Deadmau5 – The Veldt' which is now my Ibiza leaving song, its actually a really nice track, not sure if it would work in a club but it will now always have a place in my heart…
Slept the entire flight home and arrived back in rainy England around 6.15 I think, im not sure.

Final Thoughts

I hope you enjoyed this review, I had fun writing it and reliving the moments, its by far the most detailed one iv done.
Ibiza is still as magical as ever, even if a little quieter. I don't think I can rank my trips to Ibiza as they have all been awesome for there own reasons, but this one was certainly as special as ever. I will definitely be back next year now theres nothing keeping me away, no 3 year breaks again 
Next year however I will staying in Playa Den Bosa, San Antonio just isn't really my sort of thing anymore.
Just one regret from this year and that's not going to space, next year ill be there for sure.

Thanks for all your comments, if your going out to the white isle this year, Enjoy it, it's the greatest place on earth!!!

There's also the new Enter night at Space which has been very busy this year (much more people than used to go to Kehakuma), and Paradise at DC-10 has also been a smash hit, probably soaking up a few people who would otherwise have gone to Cream. This, coupled with the drop in numbers, probably has something to do with it .

It's really an awful feeling (even when you're not feeling the day-later emotions of 4 Rockstars :spank:) and in many ways leaving around midday is much easier. Twice last year I sat near San An as the Sunset approached, and after it set rushed off to extend my stay for another day or two ! ... Excuse me - can I just say something ... I don't want to go !

   ... please tell me you can't hear it in the departure lounge ? What a terrible way to have to leave the island  ... may have to look into ferries to Mallorca instead

Yes - and 8).

Glad you enjoyed Cream. It's my favourite night. I hope Emery picks his game up for when we see him on the Anjunabeats night - his track selection really doesn't change. Certainly agree with you he is too big for his boots.

Won't get to see PvD this year in Ibiza. He was my best night last year, and first time I'd seen him since he switched to the setup he got now (last time I saw him was in 2008, and he blew me away). Our Cream lineup isn't the strongest, with none of the DJs on form at the moment. Above & Beyond and Emery are so hit and miss - just hope Mat Zo makes up for it. Should of gone a week earlier, in hindsight.

I've loved this review especially as I'll be doing a lot of the same nights as you on my next trip. You've got loads of detail in there and if the memories of your trip start to fade you can just relive it by reading your review. I've also had a 3 year break so cannot wait to get over there again in September.

My first few trips were all to San An but I have to say I prefer being over the other side of the island. Having said that we are going to end up doing a bit of toing and froing this year. You've probably got a better chance of making it to Space if you are staying in PDB too

Most people I know are saying exactly the same thing about Gareth Emery. It's a shame as he was ace just a couple of years back.

Above and Beyond have been my favourite DJ's for years. I first saw them in 2001 when they first started out and played the ickle tiny club I used to go to in Manchester. Have seen them loads over the years but the last time I saw them in Leeds last year was the first time I didn't enjoy them. They've never been playing in Ibiza on any of my previous visits so I just keeping my fingers crossed that they don't disappoint.

He was ace last year, not sure where this new found love for cheesy house has come, he needs to make his mind up what he ants to play because he's ruining my nights out with his style...

I was at A&B in leeds last year, thought it was an incredible set, they too have changed their style, they used to build there sets now its pretty much proggy/prog lift whatever you want to call it throughout, but at least you know what your going to get, i still love them... :]

I wouldnt have thought the night at space would take away from the trance/house loving cream crowd, but maybe your right, i prefered it this year anyway, i need room to dance, it was just daft in previous years...

PVD is the man, getting to see him 3 times in the next month or so, Creamfields WHP & GG/D.S in leeds :)

Reminds me I need to start buying tickets... Oct / Nov gonna be expensive.
A&B in April last year at DS? Was there for that. Outstanding night. They sucked at their Brixton gig. Completly predicable set. :(

Yes that one. In fairness my mate I was with was not feeling well so much of the night was spent with her in the toilets but whenever I did come out I didn't think much to what they were playing.

That's the problem overall with Above & Beyond - Just too hit and miss.

Awesome review and great to see that some trance nights seem to be still going strong 8)

It's been a 10 year break for myself! Got to admit that reading your review has given me both flashbacks and so excited to go back next September that I'm liable to have an anxiety attack soon ;)

PRELUDE:

...and stayed at the S'anfora Azuline hotel in San Antonio

...The Sanfora was the cheapest option we could find, the price included Bed & Breakfast

...turned out actually to be a pretty decent hotel for what we needed it for.

Just booked on your recommendation.

I'm trying to stretch my time on the island as long as possible as i have 1 way tickets so a cheap option for a base of operations is best.

Did you notice any parking nearby? I want to get a car but may opt for a moped day rental method if parking is dodgy or non-existent.

That's the problem overall with Above & Beyond - Just too hit and miss.

And predictable at the moment. As much as I like the album Group Therapy I think they might end up being worth seeing again once the dust finally settles on it and they stop putting out singles from GT. They are just milking that album at the moment and I think a lot of die-hard trance fans are sick of hearing Sun & Moon and Thing Called Love.

I really enjoyed A&B's set at Cream this year but that was about my mood going into it more than anything. I even enjoyed their set at Brixton at Easter. But still if you compare those sets to the last two times I've seen Sander Van Doorn, or Garth Emery, or to their older sets - in the cold light of day, there's no comparison.

nice review mate8)

can i ask, what kinda age range is going to cream for Paul Van Dyke? for some reason i just associate him with an older crowd.

ps. i see you were going to creamfields...really unfortunate with the weather on that...:(

Great review!

Loved it and read it to my girl friend as we drove from Munich to Warsaw (at least filling a fraction of that time).

Certainly going to try the Tropi in September as I'll be staying in San An making Bora Bora difficult to reach and will need a watering hole.

It'll be my 1st time in San An, I know it's annoying but I'm trying for a budget time and hope that I can find peace with that part of the island... (It may help that it'll be September).

Funny note, I was actually at the ASOT show you were and agree 100% every act was spot on. Even Tydi was spot on. You are way better at catching familiar tunes than I am (I just don't have a good memory for song names and almost always have my MP3s on random without looking at the title).

Much thanks for posting the titles as I found some new music that I loved that night and would have had a devil of a time finding otherwise.
