Monday 23rd
This is probably going to go down as my best ever day in Ibiza.
It started with the early alarms but due to the heaviness of the previous night we ignored them and stayed in bed until about 11. By the time we were out of the room it was closer to midday I think, we were all a little worse for wear as expected but none of us in to much of a state, we headed to Itaca again for a breakfast, devoured that whilst chatting about the antics of the night before, ‘A' had a good laugh when he heard the story of me and ‘J' pulling the same girl, I still stand by reasons and I don't care ïŠ I tried to piece together the hour and a half that I lost but it turns out the other two had a similar problem with memory loss. Having apparently done quite a bit of mingling during the previous night we each had a different experience of J.S which provided a lot of talking points (apparently I disappeared for about an hour at one point) whilst the others concentrated on their shape throwing for the duration. Once we had finished with our tales from the night we purchased our tickets for the Driftwood Boat Party, something I was very much looking forward to, having only ever done the 6am shipwrecked boat party before I was looking forward to a trance sunset party, Jon O'bir, Vicky Devine & Ferry Tayle on the line up. Once we bought our tickets we headed back to the hotel and chilled by the pool for the afternoon, small world that it is there were a few lads from our home town staying at our hotel, I didn't really know them but ‘A' did so we sat and chatted with them for a while, they had done Space the night before and a few of them had had zero sleep so were looking a bit rough round the edges. We sat in the sun catching the rays after the cloudy disappointment of yesterday until about 3.30 then headed up to the room to get ready for the boat party. A quick change and we were back at Itaca for the pre party at around 4.30, not before the lads stopped at KFC again, I was having none of this and kindly declined the offer of eating crap fast food again, im not one for fine cuisine but if I was going to eat it had to be something decent, I then slapped a KFC ban on the lads for the rest of the holiday. So we arrived at Itaca but the pre party didn't start until 5 so we each grabbed a bucket of Coronita and sat in the sun chatting to a girl selling tickets out on the front. We noticed the poster for Colors (the night we had planned to go to the following day) had no Lange or Super8 & Tab on it, we asked the girl what was going on and apparently the night hadn't been doing to well, so they chalked a few DJs off the lineups, this was a bit of a disappointment as we weren't prepared to go to a night that was dead and had half the lineup missing, but we decided to worry about that tomorrow instead. At 5 o'clock we headed upstairs in Itaca for the Driftwood pre party, we were pretty much the first ones there but the DJ was playing some decent tunes so we sat and enjoyed the tunes and drank our beers as the place filled up.
Ferry Tayle was sat opposite us as we walked in but I ignored the urge to go over for a chat and a picture straight away as I didn't want to seem like some sort of DJ stalker. I drank my beers plus a mojito and 2 extra pints so by the time it was time to head for the boat I was feeling pretty drunk, had a quick chat with Jon O'bir before we left (Iv got to know him on a pretty primitive basis over the last few years from attending a bunch of his gigs a few years back) requested a tune for his set ‘Andrew Bayer ft Molly Bancroft – Keep your secrets (MS54 Remix)' I know he had been playing it in his sets all year and it's a right vocal treat, he agreed and said he would play it. Think I might be starting to ramble on a bit here so ill cut to the chase.
The boat party was awesome – was on a decent sized boat but not the biggest one id ever been on, and was pretty full. It took me a good 30 minutes to find my sea legs, being pretty intoxicated didn't help as I tried to dance to the tunes, ‘A' & ‘J' didn't seem to have any such problems with it, but I had drank much more than they had and found it a real challenge to dance, even fell into a girl at one point (this would become a regular occurrence for the day) apologised to her, it actually became quite a good conversation starter ïŠ The boat party really started going off when Vicky Devine came on the decks, she dropped a bunch of awesome tunes, the highlight being a ‘Everything but the girl – missing' remix, think it was Greg Downeys but I could be wrong. Jon O'bir was next, he has changed his style since the last time I seen him play, plays much more progressive these days, but he still smashed it. Theres something about boat parties that are really special, the atmosphere was brilliant, the sun was blazing, beer was flowing and the tunes were pumping, I was having the time of my life. Someone decided it would be a good idea to do the whole sit down during the breakdown of a track and jump up as it drops, which was a good laugh, the whole boat joined in. As Jon's set neared its end he dropped the track I requested, such a great summer tune, me and ‘A' had a right good sing along to it and I attempted to video the moment, it didn't turn out to well and your can hear my very out of tune singing throughout, so it wont be getting uploaded anywhere anytime soon ïŠ For his last tune Jon dropped ‘Above & Beyond – On My Way To Heaven' and once he mixed it in he ran out of the Dj box around to us and had a good sing and dance to it, what a top fella, Really great moment.
Ferry Tayle played the last set, his style is right up my street, 140bpm uplifting bangers, I loved every second of it, however with about 30 minutes to go my legs inevitably gave up and I had to go do some sit down raving at the back of the boat, not before I got a great video of Ferry dropping ‘Flying Blue'. As the boat headed back to shore I tried my hand at a bit of seagull feeding with some crisps holding them up and letting the bird fly in and take it out of my hand, everyone cheered each time the it took the crisp (and a chunk of my finger/thumb) was fun ïŠ The boat pulled into the harbour and one of the greatest 3 hour portions of my life was over. I was buzzing as were ‘A' & ‘J' from the whole experience, we quickly headed back to the hotel to get changed and grab our essentials for the night ahead. We headed back to Tropi (via Itaca to buy our ASOT tickets) as we were told on the boat that's where the after party was taking place, but when we got there it was pretty dead, I ran back up to the boozer to say hello to John, he made me some sort of cocktail, it was horrendously strong and I only managed to drink half of it, it absolutely knocked me for six though and I started to feel its affects straight away, I headed back to Tropi for one last Vodka before heading down to Ibiza Rocks bar to wait for the free bus to privilege. I was really drunk by this point, much more than I care to be before heading into a club, so drunk infact that I started dozing off on the bus to the club, another moment im not proud of. We arrived at Privilege around 12.30, I went straight to splash my face with water to wake me up, sank a rockstar and headed out to the dancefloor where Jochen Miller was spinning. He is a top Dj and producer and played a really good warmup set, the place filled up pretty quickly and he had the crowd bouncing from the start. Cosmic Gate were on next, unfortunately as was the case the previous night my night goes pretty much black for the next 2 hours, the rockstar kicked in, add that to even more ale than I drank the previous day it was never going to be a good mix. I remember Cosmic Gate playing ‘Be Your Sound' as I remember me and ‘A' arm in arm singing to it, other than that they could have played anything, I just don't know (I learnt my lesson and have a full and proper memory of all the remaining club nights) Oh I also remember in my excitement jumping right into some girl again, I apologised immeasurably, then no more than 2 minutes later did exactly the same thing, felt like a right tit. I decided to vacate the dancefloor for a short time to sort my head out and stood at the back leaning against the railing of the pool.
Markus Schulz was on next, he was headlining as their was no Armin due to it being his daughters birthday, the first half hour of his set is a bit of a blur but I started to come round about this time and the remaining hour of his set was brilliant, highlights being when he dropped ‘Language' ‘Komha – The Dark Knight' ‘sandro silva & quintino – epic' (which come to think of it, Jules dropped the previous night, proper banging tune) and his track with Justine Suissa ‘Perception' which is one of my faves. Brilliant set overall and I was really in the mood now, loving every minute and the atmosphere was great. I did notice however that the whole of the club wasn't open, I guessed that's because there was no Armin so they were expecting reduced numbers.
Dash Berlin came on after Schulz, I was really excited about this set, his sets from ASOT550 etc had all been brilliant, and I was really turning to the more progressive & vocal side of trance. He didn't disappoint, his ‘dashups' are mostly brilliant, ‘Man On the Skyfire' being a personal favourite, he also had a couple of Coldplay remixes in their (I'm not usually a fan of chart/mainstream vocals being used in trance sets, but I make a few exception and Coldplay are one of them) ‘fix you' had the crowd singing in unison, it was brilliant. His energy behind the decks was awesome too, he was fist pumping, hand clapping, standing on the DJ booth with his arms up, writing messages on his ipad and running to the crowd throwing tshirts to the screaming masses, seeing a DJ with that much energy really transfers to the crowd I feel, gives it an extra edge, was the set of the holiday to that point and I took about 10 videos and used up half of the memory in my new, previously empty iPhone.
Last on was Tydi, a DJ id never seen before, I only managed about 10 minutes of his set on my feet, I had done a lot of raving that day and my legs were knackered, found a seat and sat down enjoying the tunes, he dropped ‘Gareth Emery – Concrete Angel' which was a pleasant surprise. Didn't see the girls I was chatting to the previous night, but obviously privilege is massive so the chances of bumping into them were quite slim.
We left for the disco bus at about 6am, sat and waited at the bus stop for about 20 minutes and it still hadn't arrived, by this point I was lying on the pavement on the verge of falling asleep. Then a lad pulled over and offered us a lift for 10 euros, he was just a worker on his Way back to San An so we jumped in, he dropped us off at the petrol station about 200 meters away from our hotel where we bought some water and headed back to our room, again it must have been 7am by the time we settled down for some sleep.
