Moving my family

Hi, I have been reading from the background. We are seriously thinking of moving with our 2 children 9 and 11 next year. My sister lives in Ibiza with her partner so we already have some contacts there. I have enrolled both children into Spanish lessons here in England before we move to help them on their way. My husband will have work when we arrive. We are thinking of renting out house out here for 6/12 months before selling. Is there ANY advice or information any of you lovely people can offer for an excited but very nervous mum? Do we need a minimum amount of money behind us?

'minimum money' - yes. getting set up simply includes a lot of costs you don't think about at first. something here, other stuff there...it all sums up.

main advice is to come on house hunt right AFTER the season - october, november, december are good months to do that. get a full year contract, anything else is a rip off. only work with well-known agencies.

also - first thing you wanna do is getting a NIE number, it's the key for everything here.

Do your research with regards to schools. Many public schools teach the majority of lessons in Ibicenco (a variant of Catalan) which is very different to Castellano (traditional Spanish). Consider the concertado schools which are usually Catholic schools part funded by the local government with parents paying an annual fee.

Thank you for your advise. Are there any families that have made the move and children are in the state schools? Best time to enrol them?

We are also moving there but now am concerned about us not being in the EU anymore- I have now done a Law degree but of course at the time of doing it, EU Law was the Law so to speak; so many things will change and although it may not happen for 2 years, it could be sooner & once we move we will burn our bridges but I am nervous as we have a disabled pensioner coming and 2 girls 12 &14 and my partner and me. How badly will the UK coming out the EU impact buying and living in Spanish governed countries ( Balearics, Canaries, Mainland etc)? We know state pensions will stop but it is a worry because if we do this- we have to do it right! Also wondering if it has an affect on the British already living there? We can't get this wrong! Is it better to buy now and stay here till we are ready to move or wait? My partner wants to take EVR but the time could be 5weeks or 2 -3 years so we have no guide! Also( sorry!) is it better to get an NIE number now and keep renewing it or wait. I would really appreciate any advice - just clear good advice as Id hate to mess up!! This is a new life totally for us severing all ties in the UK . Sorry for all the questions but I need advice! Thank you. ✈️

To 4grays4: We looked into British private schools there and depending on your finances that would be for you to decide. Its a lot cheaper than we were paying (. £4000 each child per term- daylight robbery!!!) but I have heard they are excellent schools and you could always get Spanish lessons there for them cheaper than here. I have basically taught mine simple sentences like I need a doctor, I am lost, I live at... Etc. Not sure if thats any help ....?

ibiza66 I have replied on your other conversation.

Anyone else on here have children at Mestral in the town?

Hi everyone I have been reading this with interest. We have been thinking of moving over for a few years now but know we need to raise a lot of £ so we can easily live for 18 months without worry - a local advised us to do this do you agree? Anyway the problem now is my almost 5 year old Son has been diagnosed with Autism and he is visually impaired too - can anybody tell me if there are Schools on the Island that can help him with this?

Hi, my general feel is that it's hard enough to get the appropriate help in London, so a small island where you are not a resident is unlikely to have what you need.

I have an autistic son, 3.5 years old, who has come on leaps and bounds with ABA Therapy. The change has been like moving country, so you could try it and see how you go. If your son's autism isn't too severe, perhaps you can get him to a stage where the lack of specialist help isn't a problem before moving.

Hi,
We planned to wait and hire a private Spanish tutor in Ibiza already, when the whole family moves there. But perhaps it's better to start right now (I'm planning to move earlier, but my wife and son will stay in Edinburgh for a couple of months) and we're considering SALT Edinburgh, Edina or Tayrona Spanish lessons. Hopefully, Edinburgh's schools will reopen soon and we'll be able to consult some of the private tutors in person too.
