shame tonight's game is essentially meaningless but it would be good for us to continue our mean defensive record (8 matches without conceding - not bad), now all we need is a right mid (any chance of SWP??) and a striker who scores goals (a bit like you then!! )

we won it 5 times, we won it 5 times - ai ai ai ai imes

in istanbul, we won it 5 times

we'll win it 6 times, we'll win it 6 times - ai ai ai ai imes

in gay paris, we'll win it 6 times

(sorry mate :D :D )

Let me see if I've got my stats right....

Mourinho vs. Benitez
7 games
4 wins - Chelsea
2 draws
1 win - Liverpool

No Xabi Alonso tonight either... plus the game's at Stamford Bridge. It is too bad the game is meaningless because we'll probably win 8)

morbyd, you can keep your stats and you can multiply that wins column by 10 for all i care cos nothing can take the most special european game ever at anfield. i turly believe that that game will be the best atmosphere i'll ever experience at a football match. ever!!! brilliant memories

Ah yes... the game with the goal that wasn't ;)

Best game I've ever seen was Chelsea v. Barcelona at Stamford Bridge. Similarly spectacular. High drama as the momentum swung from one team to the other and back. Great crowd too. Totally electric (and a better game of football ;) )

there are several reasons why the anfield game was better.

1)the fact it is two english teams (rivals with a bit of history) added to the spice
2)likewise the rivalry/banter between the fans was more intense (as it always is between domestic teams rather than foreign teams whose fans can't understand most of the chants/songs)
3) the media coverage before the game was unprecedented for a non-international game.
4) moreover, from the moment the first leg finished, the "special atmsophere of european nights at anfield" was being banded about by the media as a crucial factor and this continued for the whole week with every one ever connected to LFC being interviewed about that atmosphere.
5) this meant the LFC fans had a massive expectation to live up to in terms of actualling fulfilling the role of creating a special atmosphere
6) it was the deciding leg of a semi-final
7) we were massive underdogs, the difference in class between chelsea and liverpool in may was huge. barcelona and chelsea, in march or whenever that game was, were two more evenly matched sides that went on to be champions
8)that atmosphere (from an hour before kick off till an hour after the game) will never be seen again
9) most fans knew it was likely to be one of the last great european nights at anfield before we move to a new stadium
10) european nights are always more special, particularly for liverpool and Man Utd cos their is a higher majority of local fans who go to the game. so u don't get the prawn sandwich brigade who buy season tickets and only go on wknd games. they're all living/working in the south east so can't get the 2.4 kids to the game for a 7:45pm kick off. Also for european games, u have to queue up for tickets and make an effort, so that eliminates even more of the south-eastern 'lets support them cos they won stuff in the 80s' brigade. this is less of a factor at chelsea.

you're right as well, it wasn't a goal - i could see clearly that the ball didn't cross the line.

however, the fact you couldn't score against us for 180 minutes, when you dominated almost all of both games, reflects on you a lot worse than it does on us. after all we didn't ask the linesman to give it as a goal.

for a team of champions, which you had just been crowned days earlier......you look like you could have played for another 90 minutes and still not scored.

    @ terry and lampard's tears. ahhh boo hoo. teach you not to be so f**kin arrogant next time. in fact you're gettin like Man Utd in the Champs Lge, qualify every year and yep come about as close to winning as crouch does to looking half decent

I wasn't at Anfield, so I can't really say which atmosphere was better (as you couldn't comment on the Stamford Bridge atmosphere that night.)

I could list a bunch of reasons why I thought the Barca game was tops, not the least of which was because you probably had the top 2 teams in Europe at that moment. It was also a better game of football... attack and counter attack, great passing... good game all around.

Chelsea didn't look like scoring in Anfield despite applying a lot of pressure. Finishing is still an issue for us to this day. Credit to Liverpool as they defended extremely well.

Uncool to laugh at the boy's tears. It has nothing to do with arrogance... it's rough going out in the semis 2 years in a row no matter what your status. They're young lads, remember. Hell, if you thought they were crying, you should have seen my wife! (if you're reading this, sorry dear ;) )

morbyd how blinded you are by your loyalty to your club and players.

now i'm a big one on sympathy and i choke at the end of all those 'race-to-get-home' xmas movies but terry/lampard should have learnt a big big lesson that night.

the lesson being that if you shout your mouth off saying derogatory stuff about the fans and the club not just the quality of the players and be extremely arrogant about the whole thing then people will laugh at you cos you deserve to be taught a lesson in that way.

the worst thing is that neither it seems have actually learnt anything from that night in terms of how they should conduct themselves as professionals.

more worrying than those two, who i think have always had it in them, is joe cole who i played against several times as a 16 year old and was a really really nice guy. he has turned into this little spiteful, arrogant, w*nker that is unrecognisable from the superstar who played with a smile on his face when he was 16. mourinho is a bad influence in that respect. he may win you some trophies but you can win stuff without all the circus that goes with it.

You have got to be projecting  Liverpool players, and Benitez especially, have done a lot more trash talking about Chelsea than the other way around  I've got a news search engine so I can dig up some quotes if you want :P

There's a difference between confidence and arrogance. Mourinho may be arrogant but I think the boys are just confident, which is what they should be.

I know people who spend time around Joe Cole and they say he is still the nicest bloke you'll ever meet, so don't worry about him ;)

its not the people who he spends time with that I would expect to spill the beans on him. i don't want to get into 'the well i know him game' but to respond to you - i've got friends in football who have known him since he was 14 and they are the ones telling me what a little pr*ck he has turned into since he went to chelsea and its not jealousy either (as one of them plays for liverpool)

anyway morbyd..................enjoy the game...........my initial banter about looking forward to tonight's game was never meant to descend into such deep psychological analysis!!!

Maybe they see him differently because he just doesn't like them anymore because he's made new friends at his new school  ;)

Enjoy the game... see you back here in a few hours

worryingly i think this is actually true.....it wouldn't be the first time.

prediction tonight. 0-0 or maybe 1-0 to chelsea

sorrry did i miss somethin?

what was the score?
0-0

First half involved both teams struggling to put together 2 passes in a row until about 30 minutes in.

Second half was mostly Chelsea playing ball control but not being able to breach the 8-man Liverpool defense, with the Reds looking dangerous on counter-attacks but not getting the final shot. Both sides had 8 shots, with a couple more of Chelsea's being on target. Reina made 2 good saves, Cech - 1.

Lampard had 4 shots and none went in, and got booked for protesting an offside call (we had 3 people through on goal. Replays show they were onside).

Essien nearly broke Hamann's leg in the first half but didn't get sent off because the ref was looking elsewhere. Sissoko totally upended Shaun Wright-Phillips in the 2nd half and got a yellow card (and there was a nasty fowl on Gudjohnsson that went unpunshied).

Jamie Carragher was a rock. Stellar performance.

All in all, a pretty dull game to watch.

sorry, i found eastenders more riviting
It probably was. I would have stayed home to watch except my cable tv is out until the repair man comes on Friday. Unfortunately, they didn't show Eastenders at the sports bar (though the Rangers and Milan games on nearby screens were entertaining)
