Just tried to call my bank in the States and got a recording that they're closed today for a bank holiday. Got very very annoyed as I tried to remember what friggin' holiday comes in the middle of January.... until I realized it's Martin Luther King Jr day :?

How soon we forget!

Good man. How different would the world be if the oppressed or simply malcontent adopted his methods rather than blowing things up?

martin luther king is one of those people like nelson mandela or che guevara, that it is easy to profess to admire, be inspired by, respect, etc, etc when in fact a lot people will know nothing about what exactly he stood for and why. in my mind this only serves to undermine the values he stood for.

my fav MLK moment is his riposte to the "n*gga* in the white house" scandal, which for me was one of the wittiest and most intelligent ways to answer blatant small minded ignorance and prejudice. 1-0 to the good guys!!

Well yes... and no. I agree that it's important that people gain a deeper understanding of the man in order to better comprehend his historical importance and the importance of his ideas.

At the same time, I do not discount those who revere him knowing only his key stances and achievements. It doesn't undermine him, but keeps his memory alive.

i disagree with your last point altho perhaps it applies less to MLK than my other two examples. what is the point of his memory being kept alive without understanding the reasons why?

it wasn't important that MLK was with us when we reached the promised land, merely that we reached there.

It IS important to understand the reasons why... I'm guess I just mean that it's more important that everyone know something about him than that some people know everything about him. That make sense? :?
