Don't know if this has been said but MoS is at Eden this year.

San Antonio’s ability to attract the top brands in the clubbing business has received a further boost with the arrival of Ministry of Sound at Eden nightclub. It’s a major coup for the revitalised venue which brings the strongest Monday to Sunday lineup seen in years to the popular resort town. Ministry have got the hotly contested Wednesday night slot, but Big Brand Manager Jack Horlock refused to slag the opposition despite persistent provocation from the muck raking Ibiza-Voice team.
“We’re not here to compete, we’re here to put on what we feel is going to be the biggest party on the island for a Wednesday night, and good luck to all the other brands,” says Jack, displaying a contagiously positive attitude common to evangelists of all faiths, including the rave massive.
“It’s what this island’s about. It’s different types of and flavors of music. We’ve never ever felt that we’re in competition. It’s the island that’s important to us, the music and the culture.”
His sincere loyalty has been developed over three years with the first major UK brand to set up shop on this white isle. Mr Horlock and his trusty sidekick Scottish Martin met us on a fluffy day in Ibiza Town’s Plaça del Parc to perform the difficult task of hyping his party to the max without giving his entire game plan away.
How’s life at Ministry? How’s the refit?
Jack Horlock: The club’s looking beautiful, they spent 1.5 million on refurbishment in October last year. So they’ve taken this generation forward for the next ten years. This brand’s been around for as long as that. The club’s great, the club’s got a beautiful VIP room, with a massive chandelier hanging down, beautiful red curtains, the club downstairs has been given a paint and everything’s been touched up and it just looks completely different. The tunnel when you walk in looks different as well. The car park’s been tarmaced as well. It’s just a complete cleanup.
What was on last weekend?
Last weekend was Masters at Work which nine hour set which was absolutely rammed. Basically the nights are broken down into two different nights. We do a student night on the Wednesday night down there and then on a Friday is Smoove which is urban r’n’b night, which we’ll talk about in a minute. And then obviously we’ve got Saturday Sessions, as well as we do Defected, as well as we do Soul Heaven and the obviously headliners like Masters at Work.
What happened with Pacha?
We’ve been at Pacha for the last eight years. We was the first dance brand to come on the island eight years ago. But in the UK as well as internationally Ministry has gone under massive rebranding. We feel that after ten years in the business, we’re the leaders of dance music across the world. But we also like to listen to our people, so we’ve come up with this brand new concept, we feel we’re gonna give something back to the island, how it used to be - a good party atmosphere, a good vibe with a strong brand being the Ministry of Sound. Pacha was fantastic for us, we had a fantastic time. We’ve always been known especially the locals and also the international people know it’s been on a Friday at Pacha. But we decided to take it elsewhere so we’ve gone to San Antonio. It’s great for us, it’s great for the people on the island. It’s great for tourism as well. Our whole outlook is that we want to build back that theatre and that production and that shock element to the island which is used to have.
And how are you going to do that?
I can’t tell ya. ‘Cos it’s all big, it’s all big surprises, hence the fact Ministry of Sound Big Night Out. Everyone’s talking about r’n’b, it’s massive nights in London on a Friday night. Smoove is an established brand, so if you can take it at the moment, sub brands are coming now off the back of Ministry of Sound. So we’ve Ministry of Sound now as a whole, as the flagship as such. Smoove is our urban r’n’b brand as well as the albums, UK tour ‘s happening at the moment, that will then go internationally and this year it’s Big Night Out, once again for Ibiza. And then the tour will come on the back of that, we’ll release an album on the back of the night which comes out in September. It’s gonna be called ‘Big Tunes’.
Tell me some more about the Smoove crew. What’s Rampage, due to perform at the opening party this Wednesday night, like?
Rampage is cool. I met him last Friday, he’s wicked. The thing is with the Smoove talent we’ve booked this year, they’re hot. They’re hot names in London, they’re hot names in the UK. Dj Nikki’s like Kelis’s warm up dj for her gigs. We’ve got Rampage, Dj Dodge, Emma Feline, and the massive MVP Squad on East West Records which look after the likes of Sean Paul, Missy Elliott and others. And we have got a massive surprise happening on the 14th of July.
What do you think of the competition on Wednesday night?
Well I never see it as competition to Ministry of Sound, to be honest with you. We’re not here to compete, we’re here to put on what we feel is going to be the biggest party on the island for a Wednesday night, and good luck to all the other brands. It’s what this island’s about. It’s different types of and flavors of music. It’s the island that’s important to us, the music and the culture. The island’s pretty small but obviously there’s so many different clubs to go to so it’s a choice for the people really coming here on their holiday or coming to work here or live here. It’s also different territories international types of people coming here. I know there’s Canadians, French, Germans, Italians, everyone will pick where they wanna go. I can assure that our opening party will basically put us on the map.
What’s Ibiza’s reputation in England at the moment?
I love Ibiza. Ibiza’s been very good to me as an island and overall Ibiza is the last couple of years but certain tv programs hasn’t actually done it the world of good to be honest with you, not mentioning names. I think really for people in the UK most Ibiza people will always come over here. There’s three different types of people we’re trying to hit; you’ve got your 18-25 core audience, you’ve got your middle of the road, and you’ve got someone who’s like a music journalist who’s been here for donkeys years who’s fallen in love with it. What we’re trying to get across is that we’re trying to get the new generation back to Ibiza. Ministry of Sound moving to San Antonio is one of the best moves we could have done really. ‘Cos we were the established brand on the island from eight years ago so it’s bring the new kids over here, it’s gonna open the eyes to the media. The media at the moment in the UK ‘Wow, Ministry’s moving to San Antonio’ it’s a hot story.
How many people from Ministry of Sound are over here?
My crew’s gonna be Martin sitting next to me and a further team of five which are gonna be my faces for the brand out here. They’re very strong characters and if they play their cards right they can have a job next year. Martin’s from Scotland. The guys we’re recruiting are not just London-based. We’re recruiting regional, it’s important because basically Ministry of Sound is based in London but we done our Dome events and other events people travel down to come see us.
Which magazines do you check out?
I read them all, ‘cos they’re very important. Dj Magazine, Mixmag, Pacha magazine, Club Knowledge – I read them all. It’s important because I’m speaking to every media arm. Magazines are really important for the island really because it’s also gossip and finding out what went on and who did what, who saw who.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Basically our opening party’s on the 23rd of June, we’ve got two preparties, one at Coastline, which’ll be for Smoove which is the urban, r’n’b’n’hip hip then everyone will be coached over to Eden. And then we have Ministry of Sound Big Night Out which is obviously at Bar M, working with the guys at Manumission. The Manumission guys are really really excited, I’m going out for dinner with ‘em next week. Just come down and you’ll see what’s gonna happen. Basically it’s gonna be rock’n’roll from the preparties onward.
