Miami

(its not as euphoric if you get my drift) so sort of put me off a bit.
.

Whatever do you mean secret squirrel? Nods as good as wink to a blind white horse in a snowstorm after it's bolted, eh? Say no more.

WMC seems to be full of tits. literally and otherwise....

Tits aside, I'd like, nay LOVE to go to Miami, almost to the point of I'm sick of bringing it up in conversation, subtle or otherwise :(

Its the WMC - winter music conference, hence why the music is played there first

A few friends have been and they weren't too impressed.

Every year I used to say I'd knock one Ibiza holiday on the head and go to Miami instead for the WMC but I've known so many people who've been and the general consensus from them is it's very average.

All I've heard from friends is it's expensive (even more than Ibiza), a lot of the big nights that you'd want to go to are g/list only, it can be very poncey, people don't really know how to 'av it  like in Europe, the drug scene leaves a lot to be desired unless you're a coked-up wannabee etc etc etc.

As I said I've not been but I've heard so many negative reports about it that it's gone way off my to-do list - I think the final nail in the coffin for me was my friend who goes over there for 'work' every year so is g/l'd up, knows everyone over there etc..........and this year he was over there for 11 days and came back after 5 cos he said it's so rubbish.

I went there for a week last year! I have to say, I wasn't too impressed..too many people stuck very much up their own arse. Its a city fuelled by cocaine and silicon..I don't mean to be harsh but I had a lot of money nicked when I was there and it left a bad impression. Seemed a bit sleazy to me too..

That aside, ahem, it does have a great beach and great bars (there's one latin bar called Mango's on Ocean Drive that goes off every night in the summer - impossibly beautiful people dancing with very little on, on the bar and superb live latin music!)

And there is an outdoor club on the beach called 'Nikki Beach'. A bit pretentious, ferraris and lamgborghinis in the car park (ok I maybe a bit jealous!) but they play great house tunes and get big name DJ's..massage tables, little private tents etc...is definately worth a look. Doesn't compare to Space imo;) I didn't make it to Space in Miami, which is meant to be pretty good, but I went to a place on Washington Avenue (just behind Ocean Drive) called the Crobar.

I have never heard music and bass so loud in my life...I wasn't on one, so didn't really get into it and it was very dark with a few suspect characters lurking in the shadows, but it could be a good laugh with a few little friends and people you know (if you know what I mean).

To sum up - not for me but I can see why people love it.

:D

Well here's my completely opposite opinion from the above!

I went to the WMC in 2005, i thought it was brilliant, clubs are fantastic and the whole week was a lot of fun, very very very very expensive though - so start saving! Stay in South Beach as its easier to get around places. Get tickets in advance for the club nights so you dont have to queue much. Go to the festival Ultra, just for the experience of doing a festival in the middle of a city surrounded by skyscrapers! I think Godskitchen do a festival thing too that started in 2006...

The idea that everyone out there is plastic and fake isnt really true (although it is fascinating to watch Muscle Beach people and look at girls with butt implants - they aren't the majority by any means!) Everyone is normal to be honest.

Going again in 2008 - the next time the WMC coincides with my school holidays!

:)

heard many various mixed reports on the place. have thought about going myself but from what i hear it depends if your face fits if you get to certain parties, and mine probably wouldnt. tbh, if its true i cant be ****ed flying halfway round the world to a party when i know i can just go to ibiza and have a great time there, regardless of what i look like or who i know.

a lot of labels hold back releases till miami which is why things tend to go a bit dry from now until then.

I went to Miami for New Years almost 2 years ago. We stayed in South Beach, which is very expensive when compared to the rest of Florida or the US in general. We paid insane money for a 3-star hotel that was more like 2 stars... and that was because every hotel in town had doubled or tripled their prices (and most were full) because the national university-level American football championship happened to be in Miami that week. The people at our hotel told us they also tripled their prices for the WMC in March.

We went to Space (for NYE) and Mansion (for Junior Sanchez) and weren't especially impressed by the crowds. It's not that they don't know how to "'av it" like in Europe - everyone was dancing and most looked well oiled. It's just that there seemed to be a more aggressive atmosphere about things, which made the missus and I a bit uncomfortable.

There's some decent shopping in Miami but better to rent a car and drive to the malls than to be ripped off in shopping areas of South Beach (though there were some nice boutiques in SoBe). There was a nice area down to the south of the city where we walked around and had dinner once (Coral Gables, I think).

The beach in South Beach is beautiful, as are some of the others along that coast as you head north. Long, wide, clean (but, admittedly, that was in off-season) and sandy (no rocks).

Nikki Beach Club is great. They're not right on the beach, as there's a public beach in that area so it's set a bit back from the water with a sand dune separating it from the public beach area. Great food and drinks though, again, quite expensive. Lots of beautiful people... we unfortunately didn't make it to one of their parties but they sounded like a lot of fun and it's a nice venue.

Ocean Drive is a great place for a stroll. Miami is its own world, in a way - a mix of American, Cuban and other influences. There's great food around and we had an especially fun night out at a Latin music club.

That's what comes to mind at present... I'd like to go back sometime for the WMC but not really interested otherwise...

I went to WMC last year. Had a quality time to be honest. Travelled alone though bumped into fellow (ex) Spotlighter Andy Daniel & his missus on the plane from Heathrow.

I stayed in a hotel mid beach (£400 for 8 nights), right next to the Fontainbleu resort (30 mins walk / 5 mins taxi from South Beach) and it wasn't that expensive and was clean with air con, cable, pool / spa bath etc. On;y downside was that since it was a budget place there were alot of Spring breakers (which coincided with WMC last year and will this year I think) who were kind of like 16 year olds on their first trip to IBZ (drunk and over exuberent - must say though, accom was alot better than alot of cheapy Ibz places I've stayed in)

I'd recommend getting either a WMC pass (for about $200 at the moment, which gets you access into the conference hotel for the industry seminars, sales halls and such like, plus free or reduced entry into most of the club nights and events) or an M3 pass.

I pre-bought an M3 pass - $120 - (a rival dance music conference to WMC, running at the same time but which offered free enterance to all the same venues) and had no problem getting into places. Even so, door prices (and drinks) are certainly no more expensive than Ibiza town.

There's alot said about the people attenting being up themselves and unfriendly and clubs being impossible to get into if you're not a model. There's certainly alot of silcone and muscle about, but (again) it was no worse than the 'cool' (i.e ****y - Base Bar / Es Vive anyone ??) places in Ibiza and not many people were unfriendly - in fact being English was quite a talking point when approached by folks from the US. We had no problems gettng in anywhere that we wanted to other than MINT. Alot of venues were uncomfortably packed out though, real one in one out stuff.

I'd agree the clubs don't have the atmoshphere of European venues. Think this is down to (most of) the US still being mostly influenced by alcohol and chang. Easy to get sniff and weed (offered all the time) but very hard to get hold of 'tother which was a bit of a shame. Incidently if you do sample the chang (and I don't condone such things) - BEWARE - it's alot stronger than that in the UK.

BEST NIGHTS LAST YEAR (for me) :

Defected (despite the pissing rain)
MN2S
Anything at Pawn Shop (though Minimize to Maximise was absolutley wicked)
Good Times at Red Bull Mansion

CRAP LAST YEAR:

Ultra Music Festival - like the worst organised UK festie you've ever been to, but worse and harder to get home from (3hrs waiting for taxi and 1hr to get back to Miami Beach)

I'll be back there in 2007 - makes a good break in the cold winter months and's a great warm up for Ibiza - PM me of you want more info

i went in 2004 and had the time of my life but only because i was in the right company. otherwise it's a lot of hassle to even get in a club that you have a presale ticket for, the doormen expect you to bribe them to get in, everything's ridiculously expensive and the average crowd is more or less clueless.

that being said there are some cool parties as well, but trying to find them in the huge amount of happenings is difficult unless you know the right people or are lucky. and the best ones are obviously invitation only, like the legendary sasha & digweed yacht parties.

another tip is to stay somewhere in a walking distance of the clubs on sobe, otherwise you're in trouble trying to find a taxi / a parking space. try hotel clinton, it was really nice, and book asap as the prices go up every day.

especially if you combine the conference with something else it's worth a try. we were a week on south beach and then went down to the keys for some water sport action and relaxation.

there's some pics of our tip in the link below :)

Buckley - Is the chick second from the right wearing a mask?

MrMambo - People with their head up their arse are a global phenomenon...

My he said, she said - One of my friends went last year, she said it was awesome, her descriptions made me want to go this year...

In general - Everyone has a different opinion about different parties, generally it depends on each person's own state of mind at the time (especially when mind alteration is involved)... (I thought the opening party of Privilege last year was horrible while a bunch of english kids I met thought it was fantastic) So don't allow a few nay sayers to change your mind about something you wanna do, but also don't expect that you will have a blast no matter what. You will make the party into a good time or bad depending on your outlook.

i wanna go on the scarface tour in miami. they actually show the bathroom nay bath itself from the chainsaw scene.

"fly pelican fly!!!!!" 8) 8)
