DJ MARK STORIE INTERVIEW (toolroom records /
www.soundcloud.com/markstorietoolroom )
for SMARTIE PARTIE this Saturday night (12th March) @ The Lightbox (Vauxhall)
www.smartiepartie.com
1> How long have you been dj'ing?
My 1st purchase was a pair of belt drive Technics, while i was still at school 19 years a go... i already had a ready made collection of tunes due to being given a vinyl as a gift for my 8th birthday and have been collecting ever since! I'm not sure ruining my sisters double tape decks on her hi-fi's counts as dj'ing but i was certainly keen to try in my younger days...
2> When and where was you first experience of Smartie Partie
Crikey you have got me thinking there.... my friendship with Trace, Claire & the whole SP family goes back i'd say about 7/8 years as a clubber & my debut gig (under my Ninja Cowboys guise) was the main room of Turnmills around 1996 i think.... SP has consistently been one of the best regular parties in London for years so it is a pleasure to be headlining for them again, this time at the Lightbox.
3> What's your answer to the people that say... London clubbers have been spoilt & they are hard work to get the Hands in the Air effect going?
I would agree we have been spoilt club wise... in the 15 or so years that i have lived in and around London there have been many great venues come & go... but that's what happens when you party in the clubbing capital of the world & because it is so well known for that you do get tourists that come for the weekend to experience the night life but might not be into the scene so much! I certainly don't think it lacks in atmosphere or hands in the air vibe, you have just gotta know how to work them into a frenzy & make them enjoy themselves more...
4> How do you think the club scene has changed since, Turnmills, The Cross & The End all closed their doors.
I have been lucky enough in the last 10 years to have held residencies & feature regularly at those aforementioned clubs, they truely hold a special place in my heart as that is where i plied my trade & made my name... but it's all to easy to say 'Them were the days' when really times change, nothing lasts for ever. So in answer to the question nothings really changed dramatically it's just progressed onto different things that are just as exciting like the whole Sunday daytime outdoor terrace movement, that the likes of Get Diverted is championing.
5> Where do you see Dance Music in 5 years time?
I think i maybe partly answered that in my last question... as well as times changing, electronic music is ever evolving & that's a good thing! So certain currently underground genres will be more mainstream & commonly known in the household for sure.
6> Do you still go Clubbing ( Off Duty) & where's your favourite place?
I'm very rarely 'Off Duty'... even on a night off from dj'ing/ event management i will be out networking, catching up with dj/producer friends to discuss the projects we are working on etc... i am a nocturnal character & love the socialising aspect of clubbing. One of my favourite haunts would be my mates Cos & Lex's Creche party ( i will be celebrating my birthday playing there 27/02) at the Queen of Hoxton in London & i love Berlin with all it's night/daytime clubs & crazy but friendly people...
7> What projects are you working on at the moment?
I have just compiled & mixed the 'Poolside' mix for the Toolroom Miami 2011 album which is out now & i will be showcasing that at the marathon 16 hour Toolroom Knights party on the world famous Space Miami Terrace during Miami Music Week end of March... As well as my 6 date residency for Toolroom Knights at Sven Vath's Cocoon club in Frankfurt & other international dates...
Big Love, Mark ;p)
