People have made the point 'why doesn't she adopt from the US or UK'. I think a kid from Malawi would be having a lot tougher time in an orphanage than one in the orphanage of a Western country, where there's such things as foster care and volunteers.
I'm not sure where I stand on this... I don't feel comfortable with the celebrity circumvention of the law. At the same time, I'm not sure the 18-month timeframe is necessary when kids need homes.
True, Madonna will give this kid a better life than he probably faced. But then again, his father is still alive and it's sad he'll be living so far away from him.
It's a tough, complex situation but I don't think it's fair for us to pass judgement when none of us have adopted children. I'm not sure if anyone here has grown up in an orphanage but I certainly have no idea what that's like.
I have visited a home for abandoned children in Kazakhstan and spent time with orphans in Russia and it tears your heart out. At the same time, I've been on an airplane with American parents taking home newly adopted Russian kids and something about it made me a bit uneasy (specifically, one single mother who'd adopted a kid named Sergey and renamed him Blake
)
Actually, I think that's what she just did! The stated purpose of her visit was to set up a program that she will fund to support an orphanage in Malawi, so she's helping other kids as well.Barbie said:Or would she have been better of putting her money into something that could have supported lots of children in Malawi instead of cherry picking just the one??
