Madonna

I wouldn't worry about the warm up dj too much John...it's a pop concert remember. ;)

...a bloody brilliant one at that. You'll be buzzing for days afterwards - it really is a spectacle. Quite looking forward to finding out what you thought of it. 8)

Madonna switches Moscow concert to Olympic stadium
Mon Aug 28, 2006 11:57am ET

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Organizers on Monday switched the venue for Madonna's Moscow concert from a hilltop site overlooking the city to a Soviet-era stadium used in the 1980 Olympic Games because of crowd control fears.

Police said they feared up to 250,000 people may try to get into the concert -- Madonna's first in Russia -- which had space for only 35,000. They had wanted it switched to an airfield on the outskirts of Moscow.

After a weekend of talks with officials, organizers agreed to stage the show at the bigger Luzhniki stadium, built in the 1950s in parkland on the Moskva River. Spartak Moscow soccer club plays its home matches at the stadium.

"The concert is due to take place on September 12, at Luzhniki. If nothing extraordinary happens, I think everything will be okay," Vladimir Kiselyov, general director of the company organizing the concert, said on Russia's Channel One television station.

The concert had originally been set for September 11.

Funny thing is, Kiselyov isn't one of the original organizers. He's from some company owned by the Kremlin property department that apparently stepped in to resolve things.

Looks like they'll be selling an extra 15,000+ tickets too, taking the total show capacity up to over 50k, which resolves the issue about trying to get Madonna to do a second show. Luzhniki is a big stadium (up to 80000+ seats).

Glad they didn't switch it to that airfield (Tushino). Aside from being on the edge of town, it's the site of a terrorist bombing at a concert a few years ago!

There seems to be a lot of negative controversy about Madonna's first visit to Russia next week, people ripping her posters, warning about the stadium collapsing etc. Is it really that bad out there Morbyd :?:

Danger: Madonna's next venue could collapse

of a stadium where Madonna is to perform next week has warned the entire building could collapse during the show.

Nodar Kancheli, who designed the canopy roof of the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow where the pop star is playing on September 12, told the Ekho Moskvy radio station that tens of thousands of lives could be in danger if the show goes ahead.
He warned that the concert might be too loud for the building to withstand the vibrations.
He said: "The stadium could collapse if audio frequency resonates with the vibration frequency of the building. The sound waves could damage the structure."
Kancheli's past record also does not bode well for the American singer. He was the architect of the Transvaal Water Park in the Russian capital which collapsed in 2004, killing 28 people. He was found guilty of criminal negligence but this week was given an amnesty. The Luzhniki Stadium can hold 84,745 people and is the biggest sports stadium in Russia. It was the main venue for the 1980 Summer Olympics

That demonstration was small. The Orthodox church is whining abot the show, but no more than the Catholics did in Rome.

As for the stadium, I don't know... I'm just glad I've got tickets for the dance floor in the middle

Good to hear it's just a few loonies... As for the roof collapsing-that'd bring a whole new meaning for a term bringing down the house

Leaving for the stadium in 20 minutes. Very excited :D

Where's Robder???... need someone to share the joy!

Well, gotta say that Madonna puts on one hell of a show. :D

I figured she'd have layers of backup vocals to hide her weak voice, but no... she sang, and she sang well! The visuals, videos, props, dancers, everything - all absolutely stunning. It was all so much more than just a concert.

And Madonna rocking out on guitar for 2 songs? Blew me away. The thought of seeing something like that never even crossed my mind.

Aside from all the visuals, the sound was amazing.

Only a few complaints: the security for the show was Stalinist, to say the least. It took an hour to negotiate our way into the stadium.

Once inside, the dancefloor (ie general admission) area was way packed and further back from the stage than promised. In front of us was some "fan zone" area and it appears to have been completely random as to who received fan zone dancefloor and who got stuck in the dancefloor area where we were. Guys lifting their girlfriends on their shoulder and blocking your view was another problem.

Oh, and then there's Paul Oakenfold. Is this guy trying to absolutely ruin what's left of his reputation by doing this tour? His mixing was total crap. Also, I realize he' playing before a pop concert, but The World Is Mine??? I Like the Way?? Satisfaction?? Could he have played any more old, overplayed tunes? To add insult to injury, he tried to suck up to the Russian crowd by playing that ancient PPK song, a poor remix of rock goddess Zemfira, and another cheesy local club hit. I was embarassed for him.

And lastly, really wish she had done more oldies, though I realize it's a tour for the latest album and all that.

Despite the complaints, all in all a great experience.

Sorry, Finnboy.. no pics... decided not to risk taking my camera in.
