I like Portobello on a Saturday - get there early tho and get off at Ladbroke Grove (not Notting Hill station) or it will take you 547862 hours barging past tourists to get to the market.

I also like Spitalfields on Sunday.

Borough Market on Fri and Sat am for the bestest, yummy food

Camden for tat, goth wear and the poorsest quality drugs in Europe

Spitalfields (by Liverpool st stations) is, indeed and excellent bric-a brac/trendy stuff market (the brillaint brick lane market (and bars) is also close by)

mmmmm Sausage and Mash (does it come with thick onion gravy tho? and are the sausages "real" sausages, not pretend sausages :? :? :? )

Babs - what time is "early"????

Real sausages (but they also do veggie) real thick gravy, bubble and squeek. Honestly you will leave with a massive smile on your face.

It depends if you mean Babs style-eee early

If I'm going to Portobello for a proper shop I normally get there about 9.30 so I'm done my lunchtime and then hit the pub - it just gets sooooo busy by late morning and I just can't stand crowds

Unless you go like me at around 11, get stuck in the crowds because Ladbrooke Station is closed...... walk all the way to the bottom... get to the food bit... can't find the clothes...... walk back empty handed and wonder what all the fuss is about!!!

I wasn't very impressed with Portobello. It's supposed to be a paradigma of london market but I find much more interesting Spitafields or Candem

We didn't do much of the clothes tho - I was trying to go gentle on you after getting you up at 8am to be @ Selfridges for 9am

I was up before 8, actually, didn't we leave at 8,30?   ;)
The thing is that if you are a tourist like me, you read everywhere Portobello Market as the best market in London. I liked lots the walk from the tube to the market and all the shops around, but once there I thought to myself: that's all? Is taht the famous Portobello Market?
I thought Spitafields was more impressive, maybe cos everything is under one big roof
THere's ages I haven't been to Candem, but IMO there's something special in there

   And even the shop assistants were laughing at us for being out so early

I think that film (never watched it but had Hugh Grant in it??) has a lot to answer for and people have misconceptions about Notting Hill and Portobello. I just like it for the clothes but granted I can see why people would prefer Spitalfields or Camden cos they seem more like a market should be.

It's not the film, all london guides talk about portobello as "typical market" and bla bla. Even my mum, who if she saw the filmwould never remember the name, was looking forward to visit Portobello.

the top end of portobello (past americal apparel)

now thats a proper market

the bottom end is horrendous after 9.30 on a saturday
fnar fnar

Don't tell me you weren't glad cos by 1pm we'd done everywhere in Central London plus Portobello and we were sat with a wine in our hands  ;)

Maybe it's the stupid London tourist guides then - I wish they'd stop telling people about it then and it wouldn't take an hour to walk from Notting Hill to Portobello on a Saturday afternoon when it takes about 5 mins normally :spank:
