Do you think they should ban the extrem skinny models like other countries fashion shows are doing?

I don't know...

its seems these days to we convince people that that its OK to be fat!

its ok for people to shout out "You're skinny!!" or "eat some food!!"

but we can't tell people to get off their fat arses, eat sensibly and do some exercise?? All over the Western world, obesity is the fastest growing disease..

Yes, many of those models are unhealthy in that respect as well..

BUT, I think the other end is more dangerous, we don't tell people that they need to get up and do excersice, eat better and lose some weight because we would be offending over 50% of the population !

Very skinny models yes, but what weight is satisfactory?

they reject models if they have a low body-mass index, wich takes into account the heigth and the weight

Utagura, I think you have a point, I think work must be done in the 2 sides.

I think all this has come about so much recently because of a model who apparantly collapsed on the catwalk and then died minutes after where she starved herself or something, read it in a mag about a month ago.

Why has obesity become so bad? It is shocking and sad the amount of fat teenagers everywhere.

Are kids not active anymore? I know junk food is more widely available but I use to eat crap as a kid and I have never had a weight problem.

Like Utagaura said, it is simple healthly eating and keep active! Why is this so hard to learn?

its not acceptable to shout at fat people!8O :? oooops........

I honestly think people don't know what helathy eating is... chicken fingers and chips ( but I have my protein and vegetable they say!)

I have some cousins much younger than me... age 10 and 13... and they are bigger than me! (I'm 29!) truly pathetic... I think when their family orders a Chinese take away that don't see it as being bad... I know when I have a take away it tastes damn good but its going straight to my hips.

Also, I think many people think going for a little walk or doing an aerobics class once a week will counteract the other 6 days of bad eating  ("but I do exercise!" they say!)

anyway, to get back to the Mikkak's point... I still don't know... you do have to have the right body to sellt he clohtes... so I'm a bit indecisive on this one

I think some modesl are dangerously thin... I guess I just see so many more people EVERY DAY that are dangerously unhealthy the other way... I see people like that every day, I very rarely see too skinny people or models walking around every day

Last year spanish catwalks (Madrid & Barcelona) showed some really un-healty look girls and it all started there. Today the Madrid fashion week started and they rejected five unhelathy look girls.

Naomi Campbell and Claudia Shiffer never looked unhealthy, they look skin but fit

My answer to the original question: no, I don't think skinny models should be banned. I don't think it makes much sense.

If seeing skinny people gives someone 'issues', then I think that person needs to deal with those issues.

Also, what Utagara said is a very sensible take on the issue.

The problem aren't the models, the problem is the fashion industrie that has such a big impact in very young people and seem to ignore it. And, at the end of the day, it's the fashion industries who chooses the models. You just need Dolce & Gabanna making an advert with a androgine boy and you have the catwalks fulls of androgine boys
IMO if you have "time" or "space" in the medias you should be responsible with the impact of that "time" or "space"
Most models are that natural skin, my friend's youn sisters are catwalk models and they always have been very skinny but last summer one of them (top model actually) was asked to loose 3 kg to get into the summer fashion week and she had to stop doing sport because of that.
Explain to a 15 yo about people eating and having no weight problems.

Exactly. Explain it!

People love to blame everything on the media and images that kids see. In reality, parents need to take the responsibility to properly explain things to their kids.

And to be honest, in a day and age when, as mentioned above, there is a problem with obesity in a lot of cultures, I think some people could use some skinny role models! I don't mean skeleton frames, necessarily, but you get my point.

I myself look at skinnier people and recognize that I need to lose a few kilos. I think that's a good thing. Keeps that thought in my mind.

Do you know that anorexia it's a mentall illness, it's not physic?
Do you actually know anything about anorexia, what kind of people is affected and why?
And, do you remember what's to be 15?

Not everybody is mentally strong as you, specially when you are 15, you are overweighted and you get about 10.000 daily impact with images of very skinny girls. You can explain as much as you want to a teenager, but you can't prevent the teenager of being exposed to those impacts every day, every time

BTW, do you know why we are talking about it?

This is true... there are many healthy models... I think this recent thread is talking about Lily Cole and Kate Moss.

These women are far and few between

I guess i think that society always likes to BLAME someone for their problems.

so there's 2 super skinny super models out there. Do you think that we can blame a 15 year old girls anorexia on skinny models?

Just like the recent shooting at a Montreal college... lets blame Marilyn Manson and goth culture.

I don't see how getting rid of super skinny models is going to reduce the amount of anorexic teenagers. As you said its a mental illness.

I assumed you're talking about it because this debate is going on in the UK right now... at least, I heard something about it on the news in London.

Obviously, you don't want 15 year old girls (or boys) to feel they have to resort to anorexia. You've certainly got to guard against this. But I think parents can teach their kids about watching their weight.

No, it's not two supermodels who are skinny it's the whole thing.
Look, Madrid fashion week didn't accept 5 models who are <1,75 and >55 kg. That's REALLY skinny. And there was massive debate last summer when the Barcelona fashion week cos lots of the models looked really wrong. Kate Moss is super skinny but she looks healthy, specially compared to those girls of last year.

Of course you can't accuse fashion of anorexia, but it's an increassing illness, and IMO it's a problem of the society, not only of the parents, and as I said before if you manage something that has such a massive impact you should be a bit responsible.

Madrid fashion week didn't accept five models cos they are <1,75 cm and >55 kg. Convert it into your mesures and you'll see it's REALLY skinny.

I do belive that education it's all about the parents, but you can't forget the society factor cos it seems it's more and more important every day (and sometimes I think it's more and more wrong everyday)
