Ibiza. The late 1990s.
If you were there, chances are you will have heard of the club Manumission.
That’s Manumission, the gigantic all-night rave that famously attracted up
to 10,000 clubbers a night and featured fire-eaters, trapeze artists and dancing dwarves,
all climaxing in a live sex show.
Yup — proper penetrative sex, performed by a troupe of bronzed, glistening dancers
and, on occasion, the club’s co-founder, Mike McKay, with his girlfriend,
Claire Davies.
“Doing our sex thing in front of thousands empowers us,”
Davies told a journalist at the time.
Even wilder than Manumission itself, perhaps, was the notorious Manumission motel
they opened in 1998, with its naked greeter, tattooed all over her shaved privates,
and Pink Pussy strip club (frequented by the likes of Jade Jagger, Kate Moss and
Jean-Paul Gaultier) and strict no-sleeping-before-7am policy.
“Thank God the police closed it down after six months,” McKay says.
