Live 8 - Review and pics!

I'm concerned about the state of our country too, but that doesn't make me immune to what's going on in the rest of the world. True, we have hoodied ASBO ridden scallies mugging people left right and centre, but these people still have a home to go to at the end of the day, and a meal to eat (although some dont deserve to!).
Whilst some people in our country experience a certain level of poverty, it's NOTHING compared to what people in Africa are going through!

Whether these concerts will change things or not, at least they're trying, at least they're making people aware of what's going on, who otherwise wouldn't be aware.

I don't know how people can be cynical about this kind of thing, maybe it's not going to do any good, but it's certainly not going to do any bad!

Only a million times better than the originals!

That's impossible 8O

Try to get this version: Foret by Nouvelle Vague, it's incredible how good The Cure sounds Bossanova styleeee ;)

Nouvell Vague are ace, it's a french guy who versioned lots of old 80's tunes (Marian, Too Drunk to f***, Foret) bossanova styleee with a very good naif girl voice. Very recomendable if you can cope with some non-electronic music ;)

Ok..

N8, Leese - one of the reasons I enjoy living outside of the US is because the narrowmindness of my fellow Americans (will it affect us? no? ok, who cares) gets on my nerves. Don't exhibit that same behavior, please.

Vladimir Pozner, the former Soviet mouthpiece and now Russian TV presenter, said it well at Live 8 Moscow. He recalled the story of the Catholic priest in Germany who did say anything while the Nazis came for the Jews, the gypsies, the gays, the Poles, etc. When they came for the Catholic priests, there was no one else left to raise their hand in protest.

Yes, we've got poor in the US and UK... hell, they even forgot to stage a show in Russia until 2 weeks ago (and confirmed it less than a week ago) because Russia's got plenty of poor itself. Just because we have problems doesn't mean you can't help peope with much more serious problems.

Also, N8, yes, it's a cause celebe and all that, but that doesn't mean it's any important an issue just because a famous person drew your attention to it. I hope someday I can use my name to get people to pay attention to the issues important to me.

Robder, Silvia - Mixed Up is great. Especially like the versions of The Forest and In Between Days. It came out in 1991, if memory serves.

Peppermint: for once (and just this once!), I agree with the policy of the Bush administration. Last week he invited African leaders with a track record of reform and good governance to meet up at the White House. Those are definitely the nations who should be first in line for debt relief.

If i remember correctly, its actually a group consisting of about 3 guys and two girls. I watched them perform Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart on the Glastonbury coverage, I've since got myself about 10 of their tunes, very soothing :) And thats a girl singing!

Surely the right thing to do from Mr Bush.
But how much is this really going to help the people in Africa?

What they REALLY should do, is to stop selling weapons to the leaders of poor countries in Africa

to be honest i'm a lot more bothered about things closer to home like old people being murdered in the street by the youth of today
...or being murdered by an illegal imigrant from africa??

I understand what you mean N8, but at the end of the day we're all linked however far away the problem may see, and if some help can be given then it should.

Do I even need to explain that present company is excluded?

And do you disagree with me about that sad majority of our countrymen?

I do disagree somewhat, there is narrowmindedness everywhere... I get tired of hearing repeated generalizations (especially from my own people!) about how selfish and ignorant we are in the US, it seems to happen a lot on the board. Sometimes the comments are funny tho because there is a hint of truth. I guess I am still on a patriotism high with yesterday being the 4th of July and all, didn't mean to get all defensive lol.

Anyway, getting back to the point of the thread, I thought the highlights of Live 8 were definitely Madonna, U2, Green Day doing Queen's "We Are the Champions" (surprisingly good!) and the Killers... lead singer... purrrrr lol.

Oh, I agree that we get railed on all the time for no good reason... but I think the most patriotic thing you can do is be critical of your country's faults...
(and believe me, I've seen enough narrowmindedness in other countries I've visited to know that we're not the worst of the bunch! )
