(Lighthearted) Holiday Reading

I bought this book last week in HMV sale, it was only about £1.99 - 'The Damage Done' by Warren Fellows.

It's about an Australian bloke (Warren Fellows) who gets done for smuggling heroin and gets sentenced to life in a Thailand prison. He accepts he did wrong and should be punished for what he did but the inhumane treatment he received is absolutely shocking.

It's a really really good read especially for anyone who likes stuff like Midnight Express.

There end Babs Book Club for the day ;)

Just finished reading that book Babs.

Shocking on all accounts!!

8O

Did you get it in HMV's bargain bin too ;)

I just couldn't in a million years imagine how anyone could treat human beings like that regardless of their 'sins' :?

Tbh I don't know how he got out there alive and it was really sad to read at the end that his friend who was in all intents an innocent bystander in it all eventually died

No, a friend loaned it me. Which reminds me, i must get it back to her.

Yeah, i felt really sorry for both of them but what happened to his friend is beyond tragic.

The book makes you appreciate even the simplest things we take for granted.

I know, things like hygiene and food supplies without having to resort to killing rats :? I just don't know how you would ever get over the things you witnessed and ever get back to living in the 'real world' :?

I liked the review on the back by James Brown of GQ mag that said 'If you've ever had as much as a spliff on a Ko Samui beach, you must read this book'.

I read a great book called air babylon last week, it's all about what goes on in the airline industry, very amusing and shocking in parts. Just started reading a book called ' A million pieces' by James Frey it's a true blow by blow biog/memoir of a guy going through therapy for booze/drug abuse, perfect Ibiza reading don't you think! 8O

Dom's holiday read was the chris Evens biog 'Ginger nuts' :?

Is that my grown up friend Sarah? 8O 8O 8O

Yes hello, I'm grown-up Sarah, would you like to be in my gang :D

Actually I'm at home and bored and wanted people to talk to and I thought I might get more response for a literary thread than a p____a______ thread ;)

I've ordered Air Babylon for Ibiza in September, have you read 'My Canape Hell' by the same person - all about the world of 'celeb-land', very funny, a complete piss-take at times but also quite sad.

I want to read the James Frey book as well.

What is about boys and books, Tom took Howard Mark's - Mr Nice to Ibiza I think in 2001 and he still hasn't finished it

(Good idea! I'll try and be in the gang but I might shove a cheeky p___ in to see if anyone notices)

Hello grown ups!

((is that how you address them?))

Robder's reccomended read list:

Joseph Heller - Catch 22
Irvine Welsh - Porno
Marian Keyes - Sushi for beginners (for trash value 8) )
Paulo Cohelo - The alchemist
Katherine Dunn - Geek love (for wtf factor)

Oh I will have to get that book by the same author. I think she has written one about the hotel industry too.

Dom once read the 'Paul Daniels biog' I really wish I was joking but he finished it and he never finishes a book! Some people are beyond help in this life I swear!

Can I say that The Alchemist is one of the worst books I've ever read?

You can!

Agreed - it's not a literary classic but I love the simplistic way it's written...and it's perfect for when you're on holiday or travelling and feel inspired because there are soooo many levels you can understand it on.

(Getting into a literary debate at the book club Sarah - did you see that? ;) )

It's really predictable and Coelho loves too much to give moral lesson and doesn't know how to dissimulate them

Have you read any southamerican writer? I think you would love them. My fav book of all the times is HUndred Years of Solitude, by García Marquez. I've just finished for the third time

(you can print this post and show it to your grown-up friends ;) )
