Berlitz is pretty good. I used it for German and Spanish. What will to keep it fresh is try to find spanish friends and watch movies or telly in spanish if you can.
PS my Spanish is rubbish and I live in Spain.

i bet it isnt rubbish! most people say that as they never want to admit to being fluent! and even if your not fluent, if u live there, then surely u know enuf to get by?
i just hate feeling like the ignorant brit that needs everyone to speak english, id love to be able to be abroad and make a real effort in speaking spanish
i love italian as a language too
why is it some people learn languages with such ease!
me, no matter how i try, i still sound like im from the north of england! lol

To be honest it's not rubbush according to other people, but I can't go full tilt yet. I get by pretty good in a spanish community. Some people pick up langauge real easy, kids do. I think langauge is like a song you pick up some words then later you can sing the whole song. I learn more spanish when I'm out and about. The berlitz program is good but it is no conversation, rome was not built in a day.;)

I have always wanted to learn Spanish, I always find it interesting when people say they are bi lingual or can speak another language.

I just wouldnt be able to pull off the lovely spanish accent

I'm ashamed that I didn't learn Spanish in my five months in Ibiza last year. Determined to learn this year (although I won't have the advantage of being there).

The current Mrs B speaks 7 languages, 5 fluently though, so I'm confident we can get by in most places.

I speak Spanish like an Amerikun.
I was nearly fluent and had a very good accent... but that was nearly 2 decades ago

Now I'm lucky if I can string a sentence together!

I find you have good days and bad days with language as well... sometimes I think I speak Russian perfectly and some days I feel like a 3rd grader with a thick Georgian** accent!

(**Georgian as in the country not the state... strongest accent you've ever heard!)

I was going to do a post about this actually as I want to learn Spanish too as I still habour a dimming hope of upping sticks to Beunos Aires one day - love that place!

Would people recommend firstly teaching yourself and then getting a few lessons or is it possible to pick it up quite easily with a course.

I found I picked up a fair bit of GCSE style spanish when I was In South America but have always been rubbish at making the jump from that to proper conversation - bit like my english really

Def do a course - I have been doing one this year and it's helped massively. Most Colleges/Universities, I had bought CDs and books in the past but (for me anyway) I think you need a proper teacher to go thru a lot of things.

Thats what I was thinking. My old uni is only up the road from where I work and know they do evening Language classes so reckon I will enroll.

Though i do think I will probably do a couple of months on my own getting some basics sorted as dont want to start completely from scratch.

How much have you learnt in a year? Would you be able to hold a decent conversation now?

In november she was very fluent telling the colour of hair of her mum  ;)

The main thing I would say is that you need to practice, I admit some weeks I've been so slack and got home from the Uni one week with the best of intentions and then by the time the next lesson comes round my books are still in my bag  The weeks when I've really got down to it and done lots of homework and revision then I've really picked things up.

I don't ever expect to be fluent in Spanish but I do enjoy it, it's one night a week that keeps you away from the pub  and anything you learn can only be a bonus ;)

I'm definitely going to do another class next year - I'll probably be about 84 and doing my GCSE in Spanish

Oh and ps I funking hate Spanish verbs :spank:

 Was that lost in translation - it means I've come on and I'm really advanced now

Can't wait to have deep long conversations in Spanish with you in three weeks

My Spanish is quite good when I'm drunk. :? I think it's a confidence thing maybe?

For me it's the other way. If I loose hability to speak spanish in catalan when drunk, let alone english
