Laptops

designing on a laptop is a pain in the arse if u aint got it linked to a spare monitor.

if yr getting and Apple, spashout for the 17" screen one.

not sure when (or if) a G5 chipped powerbook is due. something to do with how to handle the heat generated by the G5 CPU.

I've got the 12" Powerbook and run it dual screen with a 17" CRT monitor - works fine for designing, both music and graphics. I can then use word processing / DVD player / Ableton if I'm on the road with a very compact package, but also have the screen real estate at home when I'm doing work.

NB I don't think iBooks have dual screen capability (they can mirror but not expand the desktop)

on the acer/vaio whatever, is the operating system still windows XP or whatever, if you've got a mac do you use microsoft word or somethin else. i think microsoft have brainwashed me (in a good way:? ) so much i reckon i'd be lost without my shift+F7 of CTRL+C functions:? :?

You won't have problems to get used to mac. I'm pc user from 9 to 6 and mac user from 6 to 9 and once you get used to it it's fine :D

UPDATE: Stop the presses

Apple just announced (about 20 minutes ago) the new MacBook Pro. It replaces the Powerbook line, is based on the Intel Duo Core chip (2 processors for the price of one!). It's 4 times faster than the Powerbook and looks absolutely SWEET!

I gave up on Macs 10 years ago and even I'm totally in lust!

Details here: http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

The Dell I bought 13 months ago was my first sub-$2000 laptop (3 others preceeded it) and that's only because I got a huge rebate. My brand spanking new Acer ran me $1600 but it's only got one processor not this new dual-core business

I think $2k is a good level to pay in terms of balancing features (read: technological longevity) and value.
