Lady Sovereign

Good God. I saw this child on MTV and thought it was a joke - like Goldie Lookin Chain, but on further exploration it has come to my attention that this is apparently a real "artist".

Please can someone help me make sense of Lady Sovereign and her new song Hoodie (produced by Basement Jaxx apparently.)

Im afraid. Very afraid.

It's not a joke and I actually think she's pretty good. Or she was when she started out and was just backed by one guy on decks.

Saw her the first time she played Scotland over a year ago in the side room of a small pub in Glasgow and she was brilliant. Amazing atmosphere too.

She's doing herself no favours by promoting her "chav" image IMO. She might be a talented MC but just the site of her chain smoking in an adidas tracksuit is enough to put me off :? 8O

In the States, we'd refer to that as the "trailer park" look.

Maybe she's a great MC, rapper, whatever, but it's all still just a bit tasteless.

there was another one like this called jentina or something a while back who pushed the chav look... she flopped miserably, but then, wonder if she had much talent either. Think she's changed her image now to be far far less chavvy.

Her latest song is called "Hoodie" in defence of the hooded top that most kids with Asbo's are wearing nowadays

Thing is, in a few years when she's in her twenties, she'll look back and regret making this image for herself, coz it doesn't quite look right when you've got a 23 year old still wearing Reebok classics

What difference does it make how she dresses? That is how she chooses to present herself and it's 100% real. When she first toured last year, my friend was the one who brought her to Scotland and said she was absolutely sound and really sweet. It seems like it's ok for guys to do things like that (ie Mike Skinner) but if a girl does, then she gets a slagging!

She was playing in Glasgow again last week, actually quite fancied going to see her.

Only seen her on the Streets DVD for Blinded by the Lights - she does a verse in the remixed Fit but you know it - I thought she was fab!

I think the problem is that that's how she chose to present herself :?

I don't think it's any better if it's a guy, either. Taste is a unisex thing.

You sound like such a snob at times! Why does it matter what she wears? It should be about the music.

hasn't Jay-z signed up to rockafella records..........he was really impressed by her or somethin.

Personally don't really get it..........same as goldie lookin chain, i'm with spoony (WTF are goldie lookin chain about, it jus sounds sh*t to me).

gimme Nas or Wu-tang anyday :D :D

It should be about the music, but there's nothing about her stuff that makes me wanna buy it, or go and see her. Infact it makes me want to try and avoid her it puts me off that much!
She might have some mc-ing talent, but writing songs about hoodies and asbos etc, and her whole chav image, it just doesnt appeal to me at all.

The same with GLC, some people love them, I personally can't stand them, think the whole bunch of Sovereign/GLC chavs should join up with Blazing Squad and go and live on another planet!!

Me? a snob?

hmm... (has introspective moment)... don't think so.

Different tastes, I guess. Not my style of music.

But you've got to admit that she's obviously trying to make the clothes and image part of an overall entertainment package, so I don't think you can say it's just about the music.

GLC are a piss-take but she's not. Like I said, I went to see her last year and she was excellent. I don't know what her act is like now though. From what I've heard, it was better when it wa just her and one guy behind her.

I just find it sad that (once again) people are condemned purely because of the way they look, because it's not what others see as the 'correct' look.

I don't. She's 18 and that's how she wants to dress. It might not be everyone's cup of tea (I certainly don't like it) but it's her and completely real rather than a gimmick.

Clara, you're missing the point. If she was born looking like this, that'd be one thing. The fact is, she's created this image and that's what's frightening to us upstanding folk

edit: and are you sure it's not a gimmick?

hmm. just a thought - do you, clara, as a fan of her music (or at least what she was like when you saw her), think that she will be most successful with her current look? I think that if Beckiboo, a potential customer, is put off by her current look (and many others will be, no doubt, whether you think that is correct or not) then surely she is not doing her music justice? Unless, however, you think that her chav look is a look that will gain her the most record sales, then she isn't doing her music justice by appealing to the widest audience initially.
