Kiss Somny: Shock and Disapointment

Hi folks. Someday I will get around to posting a review of our whole trip for 12 glorious days in June. Right now, I wanted to post some impressions of the new kid on the club block, Kiss Somny.

As many of you know, Kiss in Playa den Bossa has been divided into two clubs this year - Kiss and Kiss Somny. It's about a block off the main boulevard in PDB, down the sidestreet next to the mini-golf course.

I will admit that I never made it to Kiss before as my visits always focused on the super-clubs. However, on Thursday June 17 was a slow night with no major parties opening up. So, since me and the gang were staying in a nearby hotel, we decided to check out Somny. There were two other factors influencing our decision: my need to get over a disapointing evening of Morillo the night before, and some free entrance bracelets courteously supplied by some PRs on the beach at Bora Bora earlier.

So, we wandered in somewhere around 1 or 2 in the morning (difficult to pin down the timing. We'd done some damage at some bar earlier.) To enter Somny, you have to get past about 5 burly doormen (more on them later). You enter the club through what felt like a maze of some sort - to your left, then your right, down some stairs.

Inside, it appeared as though they decided to paint the whole place white. The flashing lights seemed to reflect off the walls, which was midly annoying. The bar, across the front wall, was attractive with bottles set along an inset shelf and soft colored lighting. The bar became less attractive when we paid 6 euros for a beer. I thought this was supposed to be a good value club? I could pay that at El Divino, and listen to much better music. We decided it wasn't going to be a heavy night (the Defected in the House opening was the next day) so we never found out how much other drinks cost.

I tried dancing for a bit to the average music (never did quite figure out who the DJ was) on a slightly raised platform on the edge of the dance floor. There were no go-go dancers or anything, and the platform was large enough that falling off was not likely (I wasn't THAT drunk). Nevertheless, some club employee decided I needed to get down.

Fine, whatever, no big deal, I thought. We hung out for a little longer, but found it difficult to get into dancing when there were only about 15 other people in the club. What happened to all those free bracelets they gave out? Did everyone else just come and leave, or just not bother?

OK, time to go we think, but a couple of us decided to take their beers with them. I know, bad idea, and not cool. But still, what happened next was inexcusable.

As we exited, the guards said you can't take bottles with you. The one of us furthest front opened his mouth to whine about it, but before he said a word one guard was pushing him with a palm squarely placed on his chest, while another swiped the beer from his hand and poured it in a paper cup. The cup was appreciated, but the physical attack was not.

But it gets better. While others immediately offered up their bottles to get paper cups, fearing bodily harm, one of us snuck his bottle out in his pocket. Once again, I know, not cool, but what followed was over the top.

Apparently one of the guards spotted it when, halfway down the block, my friend took the bottle out of his pocket. He began ranting and raving "you wanna f**k with me? You wanna f**k with me?" and ran towards us. We all looked back wondering what the hell his malfunction was, when he walked up to my friend repeating "you wanna f**k with me? over a bottle of beer?" He proceeded to grab the bottle, toss it in a nearby trashcan, and try to sissy-kick my friend. He ranted for a minute more and then bitch-slapped him. Needless to say, we all stood there in shock.

So, there's my Kiss Somny experience for you. In summary, free entrance if you find a bracelet, music average, no crowd or atmosphere, drinks right around regular club prices, and overzealous guards. We won't be going back there next trip.

Can't say the place was on my list of things to do. But the thing with the bottles would have happend at any club anywhere. I'm actually surprised they gave you a cup to put your beer in anywhere else they would have just tipped the whole thing down the drain.

I'm not saying we should have been able to get the bottles out... they probably just should have said "no" and taken them as most places would. I just thought the guards stepped over the line a bit. We weren't being billigerent. No need to get physical.
