Scandal-hit Moss named Model of the Year

Thu Nov 2, 7:48 PM ET

Supermodel Kate Moss won the prestigious Model of the Year prize at the British Fashion Awards on Thursday just over a year after a cocaine scandal threatened to derail her lucrative career.

Mother-of-one Moss was not at the glitzy award ceremony at London's Victoria and Albert Museum, but designer Vivienne Westwood accepted the prize for her, a spokeswoman for the British Fashion Council said.

"There was a massive cheer and Westwood went up on stage to accept it on her behalf," she said. "Kate wasn't here unfortunately. She couldn't make it."
Photographs of Moss apparently snorting large quantities of cocaine appeared in the Daily Mirror tabloid last September. She subsequently attended a drug rehabilitation program in the United States and apologized for her behavior.

The scandal, for which the 32-year-old was dubbed "cocaine Kate," prompted some advertisers to drop Moss, who has graced the covers of countless glossy magazines.

But she quickly recovered from the setback, securing high-profile contracts with several companies and earning more since the scandal than beforehand, according to fashion industry experts.

London-born Moss has featured in at least 18 major campaigns this season -- from Dior to makeup brand Rimmel.

As well as her striking looks and renowned sense of fashion, Moss has also been in the media glare because of her on-off relationship with British rocker Pete Doherty, a self-confessed drug addict who has been in and out of court over the past year.

Recent pictures and newspaper reports suggest that the couple are back together, and there has even been speculation that they are engaged to be married.

A spokesman for Doherty declined to comment on the rumors.

Other winners on the night included Giles Deacon, who received the Designer of the Year award, Marios Schwab for New Designer, Westwood for Red Carpet Designer and b Store for Shop of the Year.

The ceremony attracted the cream of British fashion, who sat around sparkling, silver-topped tables, sipping pink champagne.
Like a Phoenix from the flames

I do think she's a beautiful girl but I fully understand what the Columbian president was saying.
She was caught taking illegal drugs, plastered all over the papers but yet still wins Model of the Year. It doesn't really look good to young impressionalble kids does it?

Or maybe there's a positive lesson: if you say 'mea culpa' and go to rehab and get off the stuff (supposedly ) then you can achieve even more...

i disagree when people use this logic. blame the parents.............i never once as a kid saw someone do something and thought "ooooooh they're doing it so i'll do it". even as a youngster i knew the difference between right and wrong and therefore i was culpable when i decided to behave rightly or wrongly and i knew saying "well i saw him do it" was a cop out.

like wayne rooney swearing on a football pitch, just cos someone sees him swear doesn't mean they are gonna swear on a junior football pitch........more likely they've heard mum or dad swearing and picked it up from there.

A lot of young girls look up to Kate Moss as an idol, and the fact she has been caught taking drugs, yet gets awarded for it is only going to send out the wrong message.
Of course kids look at their elders and copy what they do. I always looked at the "cool" kids in the years above me at school and tried to copy them! It's what kids do. Fair enough you get your own mind as you get older, but the majority of children will try to emulate someone they admire.

Scandal aside, she clearly is the model of the year - she's everywhere. When you look through a magazine, it seems like she's in every other ad.

yeah but my point is not that they don't copy at all but that they will only copy some elements of them, mainly good parts or non-serious parts. e.g. a trick/skill by ronaldinho, not a headbutt or attack (if he did something like that).

its like if you emulated older 'cool' kids at school, it doens't mean if they did something really bad, or something you thought was wrong, that you would do it too.

for me, i don't believe for one minute that there were thousands even hundreds of teenagers who saw kate doin charlie and thought, "ohh i'll have a sniff of that" as if it was some kind of must have accessory.

But I'm sure there were kids/people who have thought about taking charlie, or who have just started taking it, and thought "oh well Kate Moss has done alright for herself, it cant be that bad".

I'm not preaching anti-drugs or anything, but if you're in the public eye and get caught doing something like that you should at least express a bit of remorse for it, especially someone like Kate Moss who a lot of young girls idolise.

They won't but if Kate the idol, the coolness icon does it, then they take it as it's acceptable.

no no, this is my point. if they take it as acceptable then its the parent's fault that they don't know the difference between right and wrong.

bex - i know you're not preaching anti-drugs and its nothing to do with that (charlie is just the example in this case but as i say this accusation is labelled at everyone in the public eye). my point is that i think its a cop out to blame celebs doing what normal people do for the behaviour of kids who have deemed to have been influenced.

Do you remember that at 15 whatever your parents say you should always do/think the other way?

She hasn't asked to be a role model for kids. She's never made any public statements that she's cleaner than clean. In fact she's never made any public statements at all has she? She's a fashion model, not a school teacher/Blue Peter presenter/member of the Cabinet.

I love her.

i agree with you but that is not my point. it is not whether kids behave rightly or wrongly, it is to do with that behaviour being blamed on celebs.

when i was 15 or younger, i would often do the opposite of what my parents wanted/preached............but it was cos i chose to do so and not cos I was influenced to do so by a celeb.

agreed.

i think its a cop out to blame delinquent juvenile behaviour on the fact that some celeb did something once or worse still, the oft heard argument that "all the celebs seem to be doing it these days"

i quite like her too!

 I love her too, I want her babies

But if I was 14 at the time, the fact that Kate Moss was taking coke wouldn't make me any more likely to take it than I probably already would be doing so anyway.

I think there are many impressionable (and dim) people out there who will see it as a glamorous endorsement.

It must be frustrating for that Columbian Vice president to see the death and despair of the coke industry and then seeing the likes of Katie and Pete living it up, (not Jordan and Andre) being held up as the epitomy of cool despite, or even because of, their infamous habits.

My mate Dave is was the one who influenced me in that area.

I bet tommorrow's headline will be "Columbian Vice President blames Dave for Drug War Carnage"
