JULES BUYS SAN AN RESTAURANT

Not content with owning a villa and running one of the island’s most successful club nights - Judgement Sundays - Judge Jules has bought himself a restaurant in San Antonio, Ibiza.

The DJ has bought Kasbah, one of the town’s trendiest and best-kept secrets. He fell in love with the place years ago and he’s been a regular customer ever since.

Amidst a sea of crap cafes and British beer boys, Kasbah is one of only a handful of decent eateries in San An. It’s now set to become even more of a DJ hangout and a place to be seen.

”We were its most frequent customers, spending so much money there every summer that it seemed cheaper to buy the place,” jokes Jules. “It’s the only restaurant serving ‘modern English cuisine’, and it’s got a great chef. The changes we’ve made are mainly updates - it was a very successful business anyway. We’ve refurbished the adjoining bar, and called it ‘Arena’ (Spanish for sand), which will be the hub of our activities on the island.”

This latest purchase by the DJ suggests he sees a future for Ibiza’s tourism industry, despite reports of dwindling numbers. Jules reckons that such reports are crap: “In 2003 numbers at our Judgement Sundays night was up on 2002. Some of the clubs have reported that the clubbing season has become a bit shorter on the island, but very few would report a drop in numbers in peak season.”

So is a restaurant the new status symbol for superstar DJs? Not for Jules, he sees his investment as a long term solution to enjoying the Island long after he’s hung up his headphones, rather than a flashy DJ accessory: “The decision was about buying a business that I wholly believe in, and giving me a reason to continue coming to Ibiza in ten year’s time when I’m no longer DJing,” he states.

Is there any chance that his uncle, TV chef Rick Stein, might pop down to help out in the kitchen? “Once we’ve proved ourselves I might call in a family favour, but more from an advice perspective rather than asking him to get his hands dirty in the kitchen.”

What’s Ibiza still lacking? “Direct flights to the UK in wintertime. The island’s absolutely gorgeous out of season.”

Judgement Sundays is held, rather unsurprisingly, every Sunday at Eden in San An. You might find the DJ doing the washing up beforehand at Kasbah, next door to bar Kanya.

Hopefully now you'll be able to listen to the Judges mixes whilst eating then purchase a pair of novelty galsses on the way out.
