Does anyone know what people who work in Publishing actually do?

I've been thinking about my career path recently, not 100% sure if Accounting is the profession for me. I love writing, reading, anything English-y really. Someone said to me I'd like working in Publishing... but I dont really know what it is :? Is it just publishing books etc :?:

What other writing/reading/creative orientated jobs can I look at :? :?:

I have a friend who works in Publishing - I know she proof reads manuscripts for writers when they come in and amends drafts....

She also has a "photographic memory/ total recall" or whatever the correct terminology for someone who can memorise a full 2 pages of draft and repeat verbatim including the punctuation - she scares me....... 8O

Her party trick when there is an after club group people is to repeat word for word, a full conversation between said group of people that she has been eavesdropping on ....... it really freaks people out.... 8O 8O 8O

How good is she on Simpson quotes?

She could probably recite most episodes from every series verbatim - she is so totally freaky ........ You could never get one over on her and deny something - she just waits a few secs then repeats the full conversation that you had with her...... :? :? :?

Can she count cards?

Is she single?

What am I Cilla Black????????

She's attached as it happens and moving back to NY in Feb unfortunately for you......

Well, we all have attachments, and as much as I don't like to act the homewrecker, not many people understand the struggle it is for me to find a woman my mental equivalent.

And, as the t-shirt and song say, I love New York. It was always my dream/ambition to be working there when I get to my 30's.

Have you got pictures?

*applauds*

Why don't you get a an accounts job in an industry you like the idea of and then see if you still want to move out of the bean-counting department once you're there?

You obviously don't know me very well then.

To quote Michael Jackson: "I'm not like other guys..."

Bec I used to work in Publishing, tbh I found it too slow paced for me for me. You need to have really good project manager skills, be able to juggle loads of things at once and a really good eye for detail. When I locate some braincells I can give you the name of a couple of good recruitment consultants who deal in that area so you can have a chat with them if you want.

I was more talking about book publishing IG.

I'm not about to move jobs anytime soon, I do like my job where I am now, but I'm just thinking long term career prospects, not really sure whether I want to be an accountant, yet I'm scared to make the move incase I end up hating my new career!

I dunno... :? To all the more mature posters out there: Were you doing the job you're doing now when you were 22? Or did you have quite a few career changes before you decided on the one you currently work in?

i know what its like. I have a part time job here in copenhagen next to my "real" profession in the music business. and it scares me, to change my career choice. nevertheless im going to the UK to attempt this for half a year to see if it will improve. and still carry on working and temping.....
i have worked in the music bus´since i was 16 and would never like to do anything else, but because it IS risky - you have to rely on other things....and never take anything for granted.

1 career, 2nd full time position.

alternative of slaving away in a kitchen for a living does not appeal.

Do I fall into the category of a mature poster

I didn't have a clue what I wanted to do at 22, I had only just finished at University and somehow ended in Marketing, you've got loads of time to work out what you want to do in life.

Bec I did magazine publishing not book publishing, book publishing can be very boring, magazine publishing is a lot more interesting.

Mature in age not in responsibilty lol

Yeah I really like the idea of working for a magazine or something, writing articles etc. How would I get into that kind of industry though? Just write off to different magazines I guess?

When I was 22, I was managing an ice cream and coffee shop. I'd worked there part time in university and stayed on to run the place for almost a year after I finished.

Ice cream is an addictive business - it's one of the few professions that's all about making people smile. I had serious thoughts about staying in it. My boss even offered me equity in a new store he opened (10%!) if I stuck around to manage it, but I decided to move back to my home town.

11 years later, I've spent a decade in the PR business and I can't complain. I can't say I really picked my career - it was the first job I got after 3 months of temping when I relocated. I seem to be decent at it, though, so I've stayed in the field. No pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in this business, but it pays the bills decently.

Still wish I'd gotten serious about my music but for every rock star there's a million wannabees I suppose

If you wanted to write articles etc you'd probably need a journalism qualification as it's a really difficult field to get into and there's lots of competition, they also use a lot of freelancers. You could write articles and send them off to magazines but they do get indundated with people doing this. There's lots of other jobs in Publishing tho, you could become an Account Manager like what I did where you're responsible for the day to day running of the magazine.

have a break, and think about what u could do, or would want to do. research into it, and go for it.

only you have the answers

Yes. Get a portfolio together (even if it hasn't been published) and email it off to various publications you'd like to write for. You'll probably start with fairly small articles like reviews before working your way up to features and interviews.

Be warned though. The pay is fairly lousy, hence why I work in marketing too to earn a decent salary. Although once you've made contacts, you can branch out. Ideally, I'd like to start my own publication.

Do what you want to do with your life, especially if you're only 22. You've plenty of time to make mistakes before you find what you want to do. I know people in their 40s who still don't know what they want to do! This is one of the diseases of the current era, everyone is pressured into finding the dream job, partner, house, life when they've hardly left uni. It takes time! Good luck.

when I was 22 I didn't know what to do, I was still at university, (and working 3 crappy jobs) because I'd taken some time off in the middle of my degree, then I went back to finish if off

I'm 28.. and I still don't know what I want to do... My dad switched professions when he was 50.

I think we're quite lucky that we do have these options (maybe too many??), and maybe thats the problem. going back to uni.. or changing your career in your 30s, 40s or 50s isn't uncommon these days.

When my grandparents ( and my parents) went to uni, they got their degree, then worked and had a family.. wasn't even an option to decide to go back and change their career.

I don't know anyone who knew what they wanted t at 22, and if they thought they did, they aren't doing it now!

Thanks for your advice (and everyone else too!). I guess I shouldn't worry too much about what career I'm in at my age, I'm happy in the job I'm in at the moment, if I am destined to be in a different career (hollywood actress/catwalk model etc) them time will tell!

I will persue my writing ambitions though and start writing stories/articles. Just gotta find the time in between studying to be an accountant and a professional chocolate taster
