Job help?

Can anyone here give me an insight into recruitment consultancy? Currently looking at my career options after finishing uni, and there appears to be literally 1000's of jobs in this sector, and the money is very appealing.

Anyone with first hand experience or knowledge of the job?

Cheers

Don't do it 8O 8O 8O

I had this brief brainlapse where I decided to go into recruitment, OMG the worse mistake I ever made. It's so easy to get into, I contacted a few recruitment agencies and got offered jobs with them all, I should have realised at that point what it was like if it was so easy to get into

Basically it is just a complete sales job, I thought it would be nice dealing with people, finding them their 'ideal' job etc but it's just sell sell sell. Dealing with candidates is only a small part of the job, most of it is cold calling and then building up relationships with new clients but you know how many recruitment agencies are out there now, it's such a cut-throat business. You've got to be a very specific kind of person cos you get knock back after knock back and you're not allowed to take no for an answer whereas I was just like 'ok you don't want to use us for your recruitment, sorry for bothering you'

The money is good but you're expected to work really long hours. A couple of my friends have done it but they both agree that it's not the kind of thing you'd want to do as a long-term career cos you do just feel completely burnt out by it all.

My recruitment career lasted all of 8 days and then I did a runner never to return again

Thanks for the advice Sarah, had heard before it was like that. Think it was just the money that was really appealing to me ;)

Just trying to weigh up all my options just now...quite a scary time, but exciting to :D

Anyone want to give me a job? Get my final exam results on Friday :?

i hated waiting for my final results, i was too chicken to go into uni to check got a mate to do it and ring me :D you will be fine i bet

Loads of rachel's mates get there results soon. When she told me how soon there coming out i was well surprised. Never realised they came out sooooo soon after the exams.

good luck.

I've worked in Recruitment for a long time and to a degree what barbie says is true, there are a lot of cowboys.

Which is why it's so easy to build a good reputation. The industry struggles to retain it's staff as many use the pile em high canon fodder appraoch to staff training. But although it is common there are plenty of reputable firms out there.

I own a large recruitment consultancy. Prior to this I have worked for international, national and regional consultancies, some good some terrible. The industry is now a lot more highly regulated in an effort to deter the cowboys out there.

You need to pick a well established firm with a good reputation for training and development. Ask to spend time in the office during a typical day to see what the office environment is like, question staff turnover percentages.

No doubt about it, it's a job where you'll either thrive or fail. But the rewards are high and for every cowboy out there there are companies who do it right and look after their staff. I have 25 year old consultants who would never consider themselves "Salespeople" who make £60k - £75k. These aren;t your hard faced sales people - they're 25 year lasses with a knack for building relationships and establishing trust.

I'd recommend recruitment to anyone, but then i would, it's give me everything I wanted and more from a career.

I look for individuals with a good work ethic, who can manage a fair degree of stress and good communication skills.

Basically, someone bright and hardworking. Someone who wants the high rewards, but understands that they must be committed to achieve them.

Clockwatchers need not apply ;)

mmm. I asked about this on here a while back. Was thinking about it again recently (like you I adore the dollars Fergatron ;) )

After Barbie's post though it doesn't sound too appealing :?

It all depends on the person, I'm not motivated by money and I'm not good at this cut-throat malarky. As Mambo says tho there is such a high turnover of staff that that in itself speaks volumes. On the other hand tho I've got friends who've done it and done really well from it but they are all quite similar personality wise.

I think you either fall into the can do recruitment or can't do recruitment category, there's no inbetween ground.

Good thread guys :D

My friends thinking about getting into it at the moment, he's currently running an estate agents and wants to switch industry....great insight and comments Mark, i'll copy and forward those to him!

I reckon if you fancy it then follow Marks advice and do it for a month or two and see how you like it....

Some of Tom's friends have gone from estate agency to recruitment consultancy Nath and have come back to estate agency. I used to think it was similar kind of thing but they've all said it's a lot harder selling people than it is houses and is a lot more cut-throat.

I guess that each individual needs to try it to see if they like it, i know i wouldn't one bit but i think my friend would.....at least it's pretty easy to get another job back in Estate agency if you've got a good previous track record in it.

Yay they had no problems coming back and you do get quite an overlap in Estate agents and Recruitment consultants so some of the skills are pretty transferable.
