Is tourism in Ibiza at breaking point?

We’re a family of 4 who usually stay for two weeks at the beginning of July due to school holidays. As everyone knows, financially it’s already tough trying to make trips work these days in terms of travel, accommodation and budget.

So yeah that increase would hurt, forcing us to either curtail the holiday therefore spending less on the island or look elsewhere for our two weeker. Which in essence I guess is the aim of the tax hike being proposed.

Turning Ibiza into a rich wo/man's playground. Hotels have changed vastly in 20 years, form simple but perfectly hospitable hostals to "boutique 5-star" obscenities. We know who they are aiming for, and the simple tourist that wants a bed for the night is being left out.
If the authorities want more money, squeeze the yachts and cruise ships! If you want fewer tourists at peak times, then spread them around by being much cheaper off-peak. If hotels/economy takes more money in high summer, then they don't need to take as much off-peak as it's already in the bank.
Rant over!

Tbh we could only afford it this year because our friends paid for the apartment whilst they had a few free days at ours in BCN afterwards in exchange. Whilst there are obv perks living so close, Spanish pay is also a lot less in general, esp for freelancers (autónomos)… Maybe this post will self-destruct and we will somehow make it over again next year, but the days of breezily dining out and not caring about the world are sadly over

That's just a proposal by some workers union hoping for a money grab, not official policy. The article says the Balearic government already declined a more modest tourist tax hike, so it's unlikely to happen.

As for me personally, I wouldn't come to Ibiza in July-August with or without tax (the 2026 solar eclipse being an exception). Too hot, too crowded, too expensive.

Just seen that Jet2 have announced they are flying to Egypt for the first time since 2027, and it looks a big expansion flying from 6 UK airports to 2 Egyptian ones (so 12 routes)

A clear sign mass market package holiday customers are wanting more value in these financially stretched times and are looking beyond Spain and Greece.

Will Ibiza have any 'family holiday' market left? especially given resorts like Cala Llonga and San An Bay hotels keep going more upmarket.

Families are often looking for All In Holidays.
