Is Spanish necessary?

If you want to chat up a local spanish girl I would say "yes". If you want order food and booze then usually not as most menus are in multiple languages, however it is only polite to be able to ask for a beer and be able to say yes, no, please and thank you in Spanish - it isn't difficult and the Spanish here really appreciate it, imagine how pissed off you would be if you worked in a pub in the UK and had a succession of tourists coming in and asking for "dos cervecas".
 
I am still getting bad vibes about jellyfish - can you wander along the shoreline and give us a report please Casper - I'll be there in a week!

exactly it's nice to be seen to be making an effort,im trying to learn some Spanish at present :)

One of my friends had been practicing a few lines for ages, was something like 'may we have the bill please" in spanish, he said it perfectly when the girl came over and he was really impressed with himself. Only prob was the girl was english and she didnt understand him :lol:
