Ipod users

I just selected all my tracks in itunes and chose to increase their volume by 40% before uploading to the ipod

I just did the same thing with my iRiver.

Difference is awesome!

The French laws can be blamed for the euro volume cap.

For the unitiated, European Union rules set a maximum volume level on headphone-enabled audio devices that is well below what you get in the United States. The nanny state trying to prevent damage to your hearing.

I've got a US iPod mini 8)

I didn't realise this when i purchased, but luckily we are able to install the US firmware on our euro players. The sound on my player is pretty incredible without the volume cap.

I'm glad i bought the euro player because with the US iRiver (H10) you can't drag and drop. The euro version reads the player as a hard drive which gives you much more flexibilty as to which applications you choose to synch with etc - or like i said just drag and drop.

don't see the issue with the volume as it comes with to be honest, plenty loud enough for my ears, they get battered enough when i go to clubs why would I want to continue that on my ipod :?

is it cool to be going deaf at an early age........

Depends on where you're listening to it, I suppose. If you're on an airplane or in a building or something, you don't need it so loud. If I'm outside on a busy street, I find myself turning the volume up quite high.

Also, I don't like shoving the earbuds all the way into my ear, so I probably have the volume slightly higher than would otherwise be required.

I need high volume for the gym, otherwise i can hear the gym's own music (which is usually $hit!) over my player.

I don't know how you guys put up with those awful earbuds either :?

A nice slender pair of good quality Sennheiser's sound way better.

i thought the ear buds were quite good, first pair that really fitted my ears comfortably and the sound is far clearer and louder than alot of other pairs i have worn which is why i don't see the need for extra volume but anyway everyone has different ears!

These are the best in-ear phones I've ever owned:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000684HRI/203-4827457-2356709

Amazing isolation and bass response - I might actually leave the cap on my ipod for fear of destroying my ears (or getting hit by a bus whilst crossing the road)..

i originally had a US bought iPod, but sods law it didnt work when i got back to blighty and got sent a replacement. a Euro one no doubt.

nice one stu.

Not very good reviews on Amazon though :?

I can't wear earbuds, they annoy the hell out of me. Suppose they are the best solution when using outside, but proper headphones seem better for gym/home use.

As the reviews suggest, these things aren't particularly sturdy, but you'll notice everyone raving about the sound quality. I'm on my 2nd pair in 2 years, so I figure it's worth the £25 per year for earphones that are so good. Heard great things about the slim sennheisers, but I like to take my ipod everywhere so I like being able to carry my earphone around in my pocket.

£25 is excellent value for good quality sound. I think i paid £40 for the Sennheisers. They fold up nicely too.

itunes already has the ability to boost the ipod volume by 100%, if you select all tracks, right click, get info, then push the slider to 100% you will find that the volume is increased dramatically, also if you switch off the sound check function this helps too.
