Interview question....

Ok, here's the story:

I have a final interview tomorrow for a job with a marketing agency, and its looking quite promising.

However, I have another agency interested to, but I'm not able to speak to them again till Thursday.

So...what happens if I get offered the job tomorrow, then find out the one on Thursday is much better?

That make any sense?
 
Tell them you want to sleep on it, then see what happens on Thursday. if you do get offered the first one explain that to the second lot- might make them speed things up a bit ;)
 
No one, in any industry, expects you to take the job when offered. Even if it's on eyou've been wantiong for years, they'll always EXPECT you to "sleep on it"/"talk it over wit your family" ect
 
So its ok for me not to just accept the first one there and then?

Know it sounds like a very simple question, but its going to be my first real job on the career path I want.

Good to have two possible options now though8)

If I do get offered position with both, can I use the situation as a bartering tool to increase the salary one is offering?

Yes theres no problem with you going back to them and saying that firm X has offered more- if they can't match it they will just say so ;)
 
Nice, keep your fingers crossed for me then. Its the job I've wanted for ages, but havent ben able to break into up here.

Better not walk away with none now:lol: :lol: :?

having worked in the recruitment industry............this is one of the biggest turn offs for a company when employing someone but you can certainly use an offer tomorrow to improve your situation with the other company when you meet them.

i agree with the points made so far in terms of you being able to not have to make a decision there but the company might want to know what reservations you have about not accepting it if they were to offer it to you or they may ask that if they offered you the job would you withdraw from your other applications.

I appreciate you've a lot of experience in this area, but i've recruited about 15 people over the years, and probably only one of them has accepted the position on the same day, and I know a lot of other people who recruit who have said the same thing.

..and personally I would always want to speak to my family etc before making a decision. I don't think any firm would see this as unreasonable- and if they do are they really the kind of firm you want to be working for? ;)

...having said all that, you couldn't keep anyone waiting longer than one night- you'ds be pushing your luck a bit tehn

So: It ok for me not to give them an answer there and then, but be careful about using it as a bartering tool?

come on scoobs.......chill;) :lol:

my point was not that he had to give an answer on the day or accept immediately, only that many companies (and marketing agencies would fit the bill) are very personal/pushy/rigorous/etc.. with their questioning and would ask a question like that.

i'm not saying they would expect an answer to an offer but they may be clever and ask it in such a way that they didn't offer you anything but they knew exactly what the response/situation would be if they actually did offer.

my point was for fergie to be aware of this technique and prepare a response because no doubt they should be award that there he has something EOG (else on the go;) ). i actually conferred with the main point, in that its not unreasonable to ask for time to respond to an offer.

finally, in my experience with marketing agencies..........they are typically not the type of company who actually thinks or cares that you may need to discuss the offer with you family. (one candidate I had who went there said he needed to ask his wife and the employer (v.successful) said "what for, whats it got to do with her"8O :lol: )

not all like that ferg.......so don't worry:lol:

yeah....its not a major one but you don't wanna be stuck/freeze when you're getting down to business end of proceedings:lol:

Yeah both of them. Sent out letters do the main Marketing agencies in Aberdeen last week. Most wrote back that they have no positions available just now, but that they were impressed with my application so ould keep me on file.

These to agencies though seem very promising, especially the one tomorrow.
