Illetes @Formentera beach crowned Europe’s best

A woman of 61 years and Austrian nationality died in Formentera after suffering a drowning in Es Pas des Trucadors between Illetes and the islet of S'Espalmador,

is that where you can wade through the water from one island to the next when weather is good ?

It is so Icey. Although i have never seen it where i would be tempted to wade across. We had a day at Levante a few weeks back. I guess you could call it Illetas sister beach as stretches further round. It was extremely choppy with the wind and swimming was difficult. In fact there where life guards there with Jet Skis for anyone getting into trouble, also the guards where strict on how far people went out.

What's the go with Playa Illetes beach. How early are you having to get there to get a bed/beach chair and umbrella? I assume a small euro fee is charged for these.

Are you likely to get belongings stolen when in the water?

You're not likely to get your stuff stolen at all, Formentera is way safer than Ibiza. I left my backpack on the beach and didn't worry too much about it. There's a friendly touristy crowd there with lots of families, so that's basically why I felt okay.

I'm just writing up a review about Formentera in my Ibiza trip review right now actually in the review forum if you wanna know more

Yep sounds good. Keen to know about the Bed/umbrella situation as my pale skin would be destroyed without some shade during the day lol. I will have a read Cheers.

formentera has pretty much the same rate of petty crime as ibiza. I for one wouldn't leave my belongings unguarded

Makes it hard with two people wanting to take a swim. Probably wouldn't want to leave a phone or cards in a bag unattended then.

two people = no problem. take turns. I know it's not the most romantic idea, but it's simple and it works - you guaranteed won't get robbed.

option two is you buy a small sea bag (10l or so) where you put your wallet and mobiles and take it with you when you go swimming. also works and then you can go swimming the two of you together.

Yeah worried about that as I would be coming from San An. First ferry is at 10am or something. Guessing in August by the time I get across more than likely they would all be gone.

Oh really? I dunno I felt pretty safe there and at ease, didn't know petty crime was at the same rate there.

drive over to ibiza town and take an earlier ferry.
or try to book beds beforehand.
or do what thousands of others do - buy an umbrella or two and DIY :)

Beds just look like you rock up and grab one. Don't think they could be reserved on a public beach. Getting an early ferry sounds like a plan!

As Stivi has said Formentera is just the same as anywhere else when it comes to theft. You will always run the risk if you leave your belongings anywhere.

ps there are nicer and far less busy beaches then Illetes. Hire a cycle and get about, its a small island and there are some really hidden gems. Dont tell people though.. ;)

I thought Llevant which is right next door to Illetes, was way better than it. It was way less busy, you could have sections of the beach to yourself if you wanted and it gave me that Carribbean beach feeling which is never a bad thing.

I never explored the area south to La Savina though but I hope to next time. Really happy I managed to finally to do a daytrip out there.

Most people who are not "a one day tourist" like llevante much more then illetes. It´s also
nice at migjorn ca. km 11 where you have Piratebus bar (and Fippers & chillers), we were
there 3 times on our Formentera days last year.
There´s a video : Jah Chango feat. Dom Caramelo "Levante", Jah Chango is very popular
in Formentera and play often there at places like Piratebus and at Plaza Europa in Es pujols.
