ibiza's new jail !

ok out on a limb here, but I dont think its that bad in the flesh! given what it has to do

a - be a hotel for lots of people
b - be built quickly & on budget
c - be exposed to that nasty sea air & hot sun

I like the cladding on it. if i remember rightly the elevation facing the main road looks ok, its when you get around the back it looks squify.

blame the planners who approved it!

on a different tak, my fave building of the year, manchesters magistrates court - fave also for the stirling prize. can we talk more about buildings and stuff it turns me on!

... I dont think its that bad in the flesh!
given what it has to do
a - be a hotel for lots of people ...
wtf ?

... b - be built quickly ...
it was delayed ****ing 1.5 years !!!

... & on budget ...
what ?
the words "5 star" and "on a budget" doesn´t really fit together

... c - be exposed to that nasty sea air ...
"nasty sea" = nasty building exterior ??

Motoways bring crass developments even to small islands. This will be a rotting hulk in 5 years time if the planes stop coming (they come at daft enough times as it is). In 1959 San Antonio was a small fishing town and in those days even non bentley owners could afford to visit Capri and most of the british went to Bridlington, Scarborough or Balckpool 'for us holidays'. The ajuntamenteros have lost their sense of proportion and taste ( likely overcome with a nice wad of 'folding', with teh appropriaet tribute to one of the big 5), but its sad to say the whole stretch South of Evissa is heading this way, big city fever has settled in the imagination. When you can stay at placed like Can Talais, Pikes, or Atzaro, this is merely a holding cell for people whose humanity was lifted by customs.

wtf ?

- in that there are specifics regards dimensions etc that mean it is so bulky

it was delayed ****ing 1.5 years !!!

- ok, not good, but hence the rush to design & build?!

what ?

 alas every damn thing has a budget to keep to & if it is 5 star in the AA sense of the word then i'm a ninja!

regards materials - yes, if you were to have sexy limestone or sandstone for instance it would last 30 seconds with the salt & chemicals in the air.

but wait ... metalfences, cementwalls, ironsheetcontainers, observationcameras !?!
some parts of this building look like "the wall" or "the iron curtain"
during the cold war ...

... so maybe ibiza is preparing for worldwar III ...
... and this thing is a bunker - disguised as a hotel ?

I am not even close to knowing what I am talking about here!

But I would guess that the dalt villa would not get built with modern building regs.

Christ, imagine trying to get a wheel chair down one of those slopes in a fire!!

stop being a square gareth. what has buidling regs got to do with how the facade of a building looks?

it's not just the material, it's the design....

it's not just the material, it's the design....

resistance to heat transmission, fire proofing etc all affect it.

& (presumably) there must be tonnes of planning constraints to work within.

Look i'm not saying it's good, just not as awfull as some. I quite like the cladding & a lot of the pics seem to be to the rear - which is of course part of the building, just not necessarly the one people will see.

... there must be tonnes of ...
... cement left from the "highways" -
which they used for the "ibiza gran disgrace" !?

did you ever see the "ibiza gran ****" in real ?

... because then you would know that "necessarly" EVERYBODY
who wants to go inside ...
besides thousands of people using the street everyday
and/or leaving pacha at night)
... has/have to see this part of the buiding which you HAVE to pass
to reach the MAIN ENTRANCE !!!

but maybe you are always arriving by helicopter and landing on the rooftop
or wading through the sewer with your luggage ?

ha - yes I did see it. just did not plan for this exchange by inspecting the pedestrian routes of the roads around it.

anyhow, you guys win by force of outrage, I must have an overly practical view on these things.

as a compromise they could send send this bloke
at least to ibiza(´s new jail) ?!

Prisoner demands a paid summer holiday to Ibiza from jail

A prisoner has demanded he gets a paid summer holiday from jail -
because he works 52 weeks a year.

Ian Hutchison claims a sunshine break is his human right
because he works fulltime in the prison laundry.

In a letter to officials, he wrote:
"I ask because along with many fellow prisoners we are expected
to work five days a week, 52 weeks a year with apparently no holidays."

But he was told that, as a prisoner, he is not covered by labour laws
and does not qualify for paid leave.

A fellow inmate at Category C Coldingley Prison in Surrey said:
"Ian had his mind set on a two week summer break in Ibiza,
but it looks like he'll be in the laundry as usual.
He really is quite gutted."

That hotel really is a disaster, its going to be slated in 4/5 years time when everyone realises how much of an eye sore it is

4 years to build, costing 60mil. euros, nice 1!

For god's sake what are they doing to this island! instead of maintaining its original beauty, they're adding this ****. They should be inspired by D'alt Villa or San Josep and not this so called modern crap...this looks like the ministry of health here in Dubai.

Ibiza..hang in there...we're not all bad and we still love you

5-Star Closure

Amid mounting rumours that the Ibiza Gran Hotel was up for sale,
the managing director, Raul Sierra, admitted the establishment
would be closing for one month during the winter.

Although the exact dates are yet to be set, a two-month time period has been
blocked off on the hotel's website during January and February,
although Sierra insisted it would only be closed for a month.

He said the decision was taken after a number of defects were discovered
which "need to be ironed out".
He denied the hotel was closing due to poor sales over the winter period,
whilst reminding the public that the restaurant, spa and casino would remain open.

99% sure now that THE IBIZA GRAN JAIL closes -
not for 1, but for 2 (!!!) months -
from 7th january 2009 till the beginning of march 2009 !

How well did this jail - erm, hotel - do this summer?

I cringed when I saw it under construction on my way to Pacha. I remember there was a cute cat named Jorge living across the street in the apartment complex who kept meowing at me from his balcony - perhaps the monstronsity was blocking his view of Playa d'en Bossa.
