Ibiza. What else for the tourists other than theParty Scene?

At the recent Sunday Best party a few weeks back (blinding by the way) i was speaking to some of the Ibiza music scenes major players who were all moaning about increased pressure from the authorities effecting business expansion. I suggested that the Ibizian govt. should not 'bite the hand that feeds them'

This got me asking what else Ibiza has to make it stand out from other med destinations? (elsewhere in Spain, greece, italy, turkey, cyprus, france etc.) especially as everyone agrees it's too expensive compared to elsewhere.

Beaches? well whilst there are good beaches in ibiza there are good (if not better) beaches elsewhere. Benniras=too many stones, PDB= too many fag buts, Salinas= ok near malibu but too rocky elsewhere however you do get more sexy people at salinas than most other places but that i think is a by product of the party scene.

Resturants? I agree that ibiza does have some very good resturants, but so does alot of other places. The good resturants are also a by product of the party scene as many owners came to ibiza for the party or adapted their resturants to cater for the jet set.

Loose men/women to pull down the west end? Magaluf, benidorm, faliraki play del americas etc.

Great countryside? Yes it is filled with lots of pine trees and pretty forests, but so are lots of places.

Sporting facilities? poor to say the least.

The old walled city heritage site? Yes, this was the only thing i thought had nothing to do with the party scene that people may want to visit. But how many people would come to ibiza for that alone? (and what about the ruin's in greece?)

I am not knocking ibiza and I would genuinely like to find something so as when i return and meet the people this was first discussed with i can come up with something that Ibiza has that is better than anywhere else in the Med (or the world).

What do you guys think?

apart of the fact that there are many other very nice beaches than you mentionned, i think for me it was just the fantastic vibe on the island and the relaxed crowd i met that makes ibiza outstanding.

but you're right, they might have to think about improving some things (i.e. sport facilities and so on) to attract more tourists in the future...the concurrence in the mediterrean area is massive.

I know i didn't mention many beaches and there are many better ones in ibiza, but there are brilliant beaches all over the med.

The point concerning the 'vibe' is valid but is the vibe and the people in ibiza a by product of the party scene? I'd say so.

Going back today for 6 weeks and i thought i'd try and get an answer to this question. The must be something Ibiza has that others don't?

for me ibiza is different to many other med destinations for two reasons.

1. the party scene which has encouraged many people to the island but has discouraged many more from visiting.

2. the hippy, bohemian, arty atmosphere is i think ( i haven't been to any other med resorts for ages) unique. the combination of country simplicity with a bit of freaky culture gives ibiza bars, events and atmosphere like nowhere else.

ibiza like a lot of other places has good bars, nice restaurants, beautiful beaches, pretty scenery, etc etc etc. none of them are the best in the world and none are vastly different from any other place but there is that something special here that other places lack.

I suggested "the hippy, bohemian, arty atmosphere" but my friends say that these people stay partly if not wholey because of the ´party scene'.

I guess this is one arguement i´m doomed to lose

hmmmm. i'm not so sure about that. i don't think i've ever seen anybody with a season ticket for space in can tixedo. let's face it clubbers come here for 2 or 3 clubs and about 5 bars. (i've read all your reviews). The pity of the situation is the bad publicity clubbers bring to the island when in reality most of them are hardly noticable. the only clubbers i've seen this year are the rag tag army spilling out onto the main road into ibiza from privilege and amnesia when i'm trying to get to work. other than that i'd never know you were here if it wasn't for this forum.

it's an absolute disgrace.

hundreds of shoddy people in a terrible state - all over the road - trying to get into cars, hammering on the sides of buses. shameful!

i agree. just never heard that expression before!

stephen i am dissapointed in you...
i always thought of you as one of us...
some peeps go on holiday to slide down snowy mountains on planks of wood...
some go on cruises to lie about and dress up for dinner.. these are the kind that like boats a lot.
some go on cookery hols.
some go on adventure hols
some even like to spend their downtime in small caravans in skegness ...

but for me and those like me ...
we go to a place where we can get loadsa thumping bumping baseline...
lots of off ya faceness and a nice beach or two if that isnt too much trouble.,..
so for us ibiza is really the place
i thought you were one of us... living the dream...
but now it seems you are just another scammer ... trying to make a buck or two off our recreation....
no worse than a pimp or drug pusher
deeply saddened by this news
:? :?

what are you going on about discodude...

the WHOLE point being made by Spotlight is that only a part of Ibiza is the clubbing scene, hence only a section on it on the main site!

I'm sure Stephen doesnt want to be banging on the side of busses at 9am off his face, but he still loves the island or he wouldn't want to live there.

I thought you'd have a better perception of the island as a whole to be honest mate. It's not all about beans and bass.

i stopped counting how often ive been to the island, but it must be over 30 times 8O
every time im there, I ask myself, what is so fascinatic about this small spot in the mediterranian?? many people told i must be crazy to go there 3, 4 times a year,...yes i am crazy 8) ,...you have to be crazy to love that place :D .....

Good point, however we weren looking deeper than just the present club scene. It was suggested that that the hippie, arty bohemian crowd came because Spain looked poorly on people having fun, but in ibiza it was ignored and allowed to go on. Therefore these people aparently came because of the ´party scene´ of the time.

Anyway my main concern was that no one could find something that makes ibiza stand out from any other tourist resort in the med, and whilst there is a nice hippy, bohemian vibe here it does not attract much tourism.

I am still looking to win this ongoing argument with my pals and havent told them i am cheating by asking thousands on the internet!

Well Ibiza is part of Spain.

JT:
There're many more beaches and coves than Benirrás, Salinas and PDB not to complain about.

And the hippy, bohemian atmosphere in the island plus the freaky touch, I find it very attracting.

Moreover, there's an alternative music scene in Ibiza with a strong potential, but the disco-mafia is hindering them. They do easier during off-season.

I'm sure if you try to find out you'll finally get lots of reasons to get back to Ibiza.

Exactly. Because this NOISE thing is just part of BUSINESS.
All the fuzz is about NOISE and making money from that.
If you AVOID the noise you will see Ibiza as it is. Comfortable, stylish, friendly, hedonistic, wide, slow scale, so forget about the parties. They are not interesting at all. If you missed them nobody will blame you that you have missed them, never.
And you probably have more to tell afterwards when at home. That counts...

Really? What other destinations in the mediterranean are cheaper than Ibiza? You'll find that the Greek isles are just as expensive, as is Italy as are other Spanish islands, France etc.

As far as natural beauty goes, Ibiza compares well to most other Mediterranean islands/countries.
