Ibiza Smoking Ban Imposed On All 'Inside Establishments'

The only time I ever get asked for a cigarette from randoms here is when I get off the bus in Glasgow. Guaranteed that before I even make it past the big Concert Hall towards Sauchiehall Street, some wee mink has asked me for a fag. I think they wait there and prey on newcomers to town!

Thats fair enough Silvia, if it really is a cultural thing. Strange custom though. It'd be much better if people were offering cigarettes rather than asking for them. The last person who asked me, I pointed him in the direction of the cig machine, which was 5 yards from me. Its crazy, they routinely pay silly prices on alcohol, but cant be bothered paying less than 2 quid for a packet of fags.

fatphilb, for us is really crazy if you ask for a cig and you are pointed to the machine. Just with a no it's enough. ;)

Nevertheless, apart from this autonomic law, from 2006 on, the new anti-tobacco law will get started all throughout Spain, and smoking will be forbidden even inside bars and clubs, unless they have enough room to enable a smoking room or anything like that.

There's a lot of people giving up smoking these days, or just trying it. I would dare say it's in fashion to give up smoking, hehehe.

I'll wait for the end of the summer. :P

Sil, following on from this, what is the situation in Barcelona re non-smoking, have any laws been passed in mainland Spain??

i was being deliberately cheeky :) same guy had bounced through me and my friends 5 minutes previously. in hindsight, probably not a good idea to be cheeky to someone with muscles bigger than your head.

I don't know 8O I think big restaurants and bars should have restricted smoking areas, and smallers one can choose if the place is smoking or non-smoking. The odd 52 will be definitly be free-smooking 8O   ;)

30% Of All Bars Fail Anti-Smoking Test.
After carrying out 300 inspections the Balearic Government has reached the conclusion that 30% of all bars & other catering establishments are not applying the new anti-smoking laws as they should. The reason is mostly down to ignorance of the law by the owners or employees in the establishment, or lapses in applying the law as they should.

Drop in cigarette sales in the Balearics as result of new law
[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica]TOBACCO consumption (cigarettes, cigars and loose tobacco) dropped by 1.2 per cent in the Balearics in the first 11 months of the year, even though more low-cost brands had come on to the market. According to a recent report, consumption of cigarettes in the islands dropped to 186'843'700 units (a fall of 0.8 per cent compared to the first 11 months of last year). The total cost was 438.9 million euros, representing a drop of 0.7 per cent. Cigar sales dropped by 4.9 per cent to 32'043'044 units, valued at 14.3 million euros.
Cigarette paper sales dropped by 3.7 per cent to 9.2 million units, valued at 28.9 million euros.
This contrasts with figures for the whole of Spain, where consumption rose by 0.50 per cent.
According to industry sources, sales in Spain had dropped earlier in the year by as much as six per cent, but started to recover from September.
This was attributed to the launch of low-cost brands to counteract the effects of Spain's tough new anti-smoking law which comes into effect on January 1. The drop in the Balearics is due to the fact that the region's own anti-tobacco law is already in force.
The central government is studying the possibility of introducing new taxes to prevent the proliferation of the low cost brands.
Sales rose in six Spanish regions in the first 11 months of the year: the Basque Country (by 6.2 per cent, the biggest increase), Navarre, Catalonia, Castille-La Mancha, Murcia and Andalucia. Sales dropped in La Rioja (by 3.5 per cent, the biggest decrease), Madrid, Asturias, Castille-Leon, Cantabria, Extremadura, Galicia, Aragon, the Balearics and Valencia. Catalonia tops the list for the biggest cigarette sales (820 million packets), followed by Andalucia (775 million packets).
Catalonia also tops the list for cigar sales with 227 million units, followed at a distance by the Basque Country (120 million units) and Andalucia (112 million units). The most popular brand of cigarettes is Marlboro (16.9 per cent of sales) followed by Fortuna (14.74pc).
