Ibiza Smoking Ban Imposed On All 'Inside Establishments'

ill probly end up thinking theres no difference and getting arrested for it and i dont fancy spending my first holiday away wiv friends in a jail cell.

im from dublin and I think d smoking ban was a good thing..its a lot more social too as ya get loadsa people (smokers n non-smokers) heading outside and chatting/gettin 2 know each other..one bad thing is you start to notice the smell of sweat nd wot not alot easilier..u dont stink o smoke d next day tho!

Nevertheless, apart from this autonomic law, from 2006 on, the new anti-tobacco law will get started all throughout Spain, and smoking will be forbidden even inside bars and clubs, unless they have enough room to enable a smoking room or anything like that.

There's a lot of people giving up smoking these days, or just trying it. I would dare say it's in fashion to give up smoking, hehehe.

I'll wait for the end of the summer. :P

Alan Carr had the exact opposite effect on me, his horrible American-ified (no offence Americans ;) ) preachings annoyed me so much I finished reading and went out and bought a pack of 200 :?

Ever seen a book with a picture of a row of broken ciggies on the cover? The Spanish title said something like "It's easy to give up smoking if you know how". I don't remember the author, but I believe it's American. People say it had a big success.

Anti Smoking Law.
It was reported last week that so far there have only been 5 complaints about smoking taking place in establishments or public areas where it is not allowed under the new anti smoking laws introduced in July by the Balearic Government. The authorities calculated that around 90% of the businesses on the islands are respecting & adhering to the law which is a good thing as the fines can range from 6000€ to 1.000.000€ depending upon the gravity of the infringement.

Well I remember when they began that smoking band in the clubs in New York and all other establishments and yeah those who smoke protested and were very upset but now nobody complains and to be honest with you me being a non smoker i like the fact that I dont come home anymore smelling like a damn ash tray anymore... and its much clearer in the clubs than all smokey...
I was really shocked to see how much the people smoke in europe... dont they understand that smoking is so unhealthy and in actuality makes you age much quicker...
its a hard habit to break and the underline truth is most people who smoke will one day want to quit but the chemicals that make it addicting does not allow them to do so...
seriously how many people over 40 do you know just decide to start smoking... the target a young audience who really are not interested in their long term health at the time...

at least you can still smoke on the terrace you guys that smoke will be ok... it will just take time to get use to ...

I told my mate about the new smoking laws before we left... he got a good laugh when we got over as everyone was smoking everywhere...

I must say the Spaniards are some heavy smoking bastards! 8O 8O 8O

They chimney away 24/7 - everywhere.

Only place they didn't was in grocery stores :?

NEW BALEARIC ANTI-SMOKING LAW BEGINS TO BITE
Cigarette sales fall by 3.3pc
by Staff Reporter

THE number of cigarettes smoked in the Balearics in the first eight months of the year has dropped by 3.3 per cent to a total of 134.1 million packets (of 20). This was much higher than the national average of 0.4 per cent, according to a spokesman for the tobacco industry. The sales brought in 317.8 million euros, 1.5 per cent less than the first eight months of last year. But nationwide, sales were 61'431.0 million packets with a turnover of more than 6'882.0 million euros, an increase of 4.3 per cent. Health ministry sources said that a further drop in smokers can be expected over the next few months. A spokesman cited the anti-smoking law which will come into force nationwide on January 1 (the Balearics has its own anti-smoking law which came into force earlier this year) and a ten per cent increase in tobacco tax as reasons for a further fall. There has also been a drop in cigar sales, down by 5.2 per cent to 10'128 million units, with a turnover of 22'905 million euros, down by 6.5 per cent compared to the first eight months of last year. Cigarette sales went up in five regions: the Basque country (by 6.9 per cent), Navarre (4.9 per cent), Catalonia (3.1 per cent), Castille-La Mancha (1.2 per cent) and Murcia (0.6 per cent). The biggest reductions were in La Rioja (down by 4.9 per cent), followed by Castille-Leon (4.5 per cent), Madrid (3.8 per cent), Cantabria (3.7 per cent), Asturias and Balearics (3.3 per cent each). Catalonia tops the lists for the sale of cigarettes (591 million packets in the first eight months of the year) and for the sale of cigars (157 million units). The most popular brand of cigarettes is Marlboro, which accounted for 17.42 per cent of sales in August, followed by Fortuna (15.39 per cent), Chesterfield (11.18 per cent) and black Ducados (ten per cent).

Tobacco tax outstrips Balearic budget
TAX on the purchase of tobacco which the Spanish central government have put in place for the coming year will give the administration an income of nearly one thousand million euros more than the total budget it will set aside for the Balearic Islands in 2006. Budget forecasts show that 3'824 million euros will be collected in Madrid through tobacco tax while the Balearics will notch up 127 million euros through the same means. The total budget for the region, due to be presented the Parliamentary ministers today, totals 2'713 million. The coming year will see a change of direction for use of tax collected through tobacco and alcohol sales, as funds are to be channelled into the Health service, a proposal made by central government. The Balearics, along with the Canary Islands, is to receive an extra 50 million euros in budgetary help from the State, to make allowances of the extra costs incurred by virtue of their being island communities. In January, an anti-smoking law, already in place in the Balearics, will come into effect throughout the country banning smoking in the workplace and limiting it in bars and cafés.

Went to Ibiza twice this year & had no idea there was a ban!
I'm pretty sure one restaurant we went in even asked if we wanted a smoking or non-smoking table!!!

biggest problem with smoking in Ibiza is the amount of guys who ask you for one in a nightclub. THEY ARE CHEAP AS CHIPS OUT THERE!

THis is another cultural thing, Phil, it's really common in Spain and nobody gets offended or gets a funny look. ;)

when i came back to live in england, i went round asking people for a cigarrete, and they would look at me as if i'd asked them to kiss my ...., everyone looked so shocked and offended, i quickly learnt it was a no no!!!!!! :?

The only time I ever get asked for a cigarette from randoms here is when I get off the bus in Glasgow. Guaranteed that before I even make it past the big Concert Hall towards Sauchiehall Street, some wee mink has asked me for a fag. I think they wait there and prey on newcomers to town!

Thats fair enough Silvia, if it really is a cultural thing. Strange custom though. It'd be much better if people were offering cigarettes rather than asking for them. The last person who asked me, I pointed him in the direction of the cig machine, which was 5 yards from me. Its crazy, they routinely pay silly prices on alcohol, but cant be bothered paying less than 2 quid for a packet of fags.
