Ibiza Smoking Ban Imposed On All 'Inside Establishments'

Balearic authorities outlawed smoking in clubs, restaurants and hotels in Ibiza this week in a move that took a number of the island's biggest stars by surprise.

"I only heard about the ban on Sunday night, from a second hand source", Judge Jules told Skrufff, "And I sat next to Pete Tong on the flight back from Ibiza, and he wasn't aware about it at all."

"Having only found out about it this weekend, it's difficult to assess its impact," the Judgement Sunday promoter continued, "though considering the other locations I've played at where smoking's been banned, such as New York, California and Ireland for example, clubland hasn't been affected in any of those places, so there's no reason to suspect that it'll make any difference in Ibiza," he predicted.

Jules also suggested the island's much touted rock revolution has yet to have much impact on the season so far.

"All the major nights are reporting an upturn in numbers, but it's not until next week that I start spending longer each week in Ibiza, and at that point I can have more of a nosey about," he said, "but I've certainly not seen one single rocker" he laughed.
(you should change your glasses  )

The smoking ban came into force on Monday July 11 and affects all the Balearic Islands.

Hi CanadaKid,

It will be mainly outside smoking except for the very few bars and restaurants who have specific ventilation systems to be able to segregate an area inside. But i have heard that any bar not selling food can allow smoking.

I'm curious to see how they could possibly enforce this. How do you stop a club full of thousands from lighting up?? Impossible.

More info

Last week the no smoking in public places law came into affect in the Baleares. This law, the first of its type in Spain, stops smoking in all public places such as Bars & Restaurants, if they sell or manipulate food, as well as in schools, cinemas, hospitals, public lifts etc. Special smoking only areas can be set up but this is up to each owner of the bar or restaurant. If they do not create this area for smokers then all smoking is banned in the establishment. Discos & bars where no food is sold are exempt from this pioneering law. There will be a series of inspections set up to make sure that all establishments & public institutions are putting the new anti smoking controls into practice.
It was soon apparent that the local restaurants & bars serving food were not aware of the technical details of the no smoking law & very few applied the new regulations from day 1. Representatives of the catering industry called for more time to apply the new controls & more information. The authorities released the following telephone number, 902-075-727, to call for more information & help in adapting a business to the new no smoking laws.

it'd be a nightmare to enforce in the big club. it seems to me practically every spanish person smoke from like the age of 10.

i smoke, its gonna be interesting to see how its working out there, scotlands earmarked for this next year.

guess its just yet another reason to stop.

agreed phil. I only smoke on the terraces... never on the dancefloor etc., I like to be outside and considerate of the nonsmokers. Wonder how the club owners will set up smoking areas on the terraces?? How many bazillions of people smoke on the island?! Hope they don't round us all up like a bunch of cattle in a pen!!! I can't imagine not being able to enjoy a cocktail and a smoke on the terraces of Space, El Divino or Pacha for goodness sake!!

I'm all for banning smoking in clubs, although it isn't as bad in Ibiza as at home since they are all air conditioned anyway. Pacha is the only one where it really gets to me. I can't see enforcement being that big a problem, if that is the rule most people will comply. The real benefit isn't to non-smokers, it's to people who only smoke occasionally or who have given up and then have a few drinks and smoke their brains out, I have seen too many mates fall off the wagon on nights out!

Alex that's totally false.
In my office we only have ten smokers and we are more than 130 :D

we have not noticed much difference in bars on the island yet - it will be very interesting to see how this is enforced.

Just like the drugs laws, the noise pollution laws etc. etc. etc.

I can just see everyone lining up to stub out their tabs!!

In all seriousness I completely agree with your point about who benefits, being one of these likely ones to fall off the wagon at the first opportunity.

PG. I smoke inside the club too, but im very paranoid about where my fumes are going, and in bars i feel horrible smoking so i usually go out if possible or go away from others. never light up in a restauarant unless its blatantly okay with those around me to smoke.

agreed, smoking on a terrace as your unwiding with a drink on a break from throwing shapes is one little pleasure i would miss. luckily, dancefloors are as yet exempt if you read the above news stories :D

Our bylaw just came into effect July 1 over here banning smoking in all public places, including patios. I think it's a great idea, especially since I just quit, but I think the patio ban is a bit silly. Ah well. Will be interesting to see how Ibiza is like next year with this ban. To be honest though, not a lot beats having a great meal with some wine and a cigarette overlooking the sunset at Coastline... *sigh*

with regard to the food selling establishments

does this mean that El Divino & Pacha are required to be smoke free but the rest of the bigger clubs are ok?

and on that note - this exemption is not good news - this law should apply to every club

Space sell sandwiches- I believe SuperD sampled them at the opening party

Seriously- I suspect it will be similar to what they are proposing in the uk- if the food is served in a contained area then it is only that area to which the ban will apply- which would mena both Pacha and El Divino could continue to serve food and still allow smoking in the club.

i would love it if they just stopped smoking in these enclosed spaces

especially the amatuer "holiday" smokers & those that want to be seen to be smoking by waving it around like a wand - these people give the hardened smokers a bad name

:D

plus - maybe its tru, maybe its not but i don't want to take the risk of getting health issues because of someone elses addiction

Particularly the one that left a huge burn on my elbow at Space opening
