Just when you thought you couldn't possibly squeeze any more fun into your summer, Ibiza Rocks proves you wrong once again. Following on from the success of last year's ‘Freddie for a Day' charity fundraiser at Ibiza Rocks House, Mark Jones & his Wall of Sound crew are back for more fun and nonsense, all in the best possible taste, and all for a great cause- The Mercury Phoenix Trust- that wonderful legacy left to us by international music icon, Freddie Mercury, not to mention the fellow members of his supergroup- Queen.
Sunday, 2nd September is the date confirmed for the event, with the early part of the day set aside for munchin' and a-minglin' alongside the traditional Sunday Roast from 2pm. A spot of lunch, a dip in the hotel's famous pool, a quick snooze and it's time to get togs on and ‘tashed up for what is set to be yet one more magic moment in the annals of Ibiza Rocks history.
As per last year, organiser Mark Jones, Wall of Sound main man, has put together a line up that really stands out from the Ibiza crowd. As well as DJs including Lottie, Andy Carroll, Colin Peters, Stray Kitten and Grayson Shipley, get set for three headlining guest DJs SO special we are not even allowed to announce it. But hear this, you'd be mental to miss it…
And then there are the live elements of the event. Ibiza Rocks House are pleased to present an exclusive performance from UK band, Visitors, as well as, brought to us by Wall Of Sound, BB. Hotly tipped as the next best thing. BB were formed after a chance meeting at the BBC Introducing Master Class of 2011 at Abbey Road Studios. Singer Billy Wright & drummer Robert Gulston immediately bonded over a passion for pop songs, dance music and exciting live shows. After locking themselves away in a studio in their hometown of Southend, the duo honed their writing formula and emerged in 2012 with a galvanised sound and a live show that combines euphoric samples, thumping drums, explosive guitars and insanely catchy melodies. They are currently adding the final touches to their debut album.
Asked about their upcoming gig at Ibiza Rocks House and BB had this to say: “Freddie was the kind of musician you wanted to be from the first time you picked up a mic or sat down to write a song. There was something magnetic about his performances, he had thousands of people in the palm of his hand...No one has come close since. So when you get asked to go to Ibiza and pay tribute to Freddie, you go!â€
Bearing in mind at all times that this is a fundraising event, party goers are asked to seriously get involved! As well as encouraging as many Freddie lookie-likees as possible on the night, organisers stressed that the easiest way to make a contribution to the cause was by purchasing your Freddie Moustache on entrance to Ibiza Rocks House, with all proceeds going directly to the Mercury Phoenix Trust.
From the depths of his dressing up box, in the search for his Freddie costume, no doubt, Mark Jones piped up that "after last years' crazy scenes and amazing night of fun-fun-fun it seems only right to press play and pay homage to Freddie again with Ibiza Rocks House / Pikes Hotel as the incredible setting.Bringing to light the creative genius and talent of Mr. Mercury to Ibiza is a real honour..
We Will, We Will Rock You ! "
About the Charity:
Freddie Mercury died of AIDS related causes in London on 24th November 1991. Almost immediately after, the remaining members of Queen and Jim Beach, the band's manager, took the decision to raise money and awareness about AIDS in his memory. Together they organised the 1992 Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness. The Mercury Phoenix Trust was founded to distribute the monies raised from this concert and it has continued to be engaged in numerous other fundraising activities.
Since 1992 the Mercury Phoenix Trust has been responsible for donating more than $15 million in the fight against AIDS making over 750 grants to charities worldwide. Applications for grants have come in from many countries around the world and collaboration has been realised with groups as far removed as the World Health Organisation to grass-root organisations run partly by voluntary workers in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, Nepal and India. The Trust has adapted its policy to concentrate on HIV/AIDS education and awareness in the developing world.
The legend of Pikes Hotel:
When it comes to rock n roll anecdotes, Freddie Mercury's fame where Pikes Hotel is concerned is legendary. A regular fixture of the hotel, he was a close friend of the hotel's original owner Tony Pike ‘back in the day' and as the story so famously goes, Mercury celebrated his 41st birthday at the hidden hotel; a party that lasted for days and spawned many of the aforementioned anecdotes.
These days, and although the world is a less flamboyant place since the passing of the Queen vocalist, his memory lives on at Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes, not least through the Freddie Suite at Ibiza Rocks House; an enormous room, the centre of hedonism and happy times during Freddie's reign, now converted into one of the island's nocturnal hot-spots for those in the know. Lovingly restored under the ownership and careful direction of Ibiza's foremost live music promoters, Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle. Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes continues to celebrate Freddie's free spirit and zest for life.
As a final point to note, with the date of the event so close to what would have been Freddie Mercury's 66th birthday, the aim of the event is to celebrate the life and times of one of the best, whilst raising funds to help those affected by what took him from us.
Because ‘these are the days of our lives...' Lets make it a suitable homage to the King of Queen…
