Ibiza Proms

it was kak

And not that original either.

Dave Pearce anthems in a posh venue

The likes of bugge westelofft, henrik schwarz, derrick may, carl craig, francesco tristano have all successfully fused electronic and orchestral music before. It isn't new.

As ever, Pete Tong playing catch-up...

Who cares, just enjoy it for what it is !

I thought it was excellent !

Which of those acts has the cultural reach of the BBC?!

I thought the bbc's glasto coverage was v good. And Laverne's 6 radio show is consistently ace. What's wrong with showcasing new music to a wide audience? Why do people want to hear tired anthems? As for Tong, i wish he'd go away. He's done nothing for music in years

Nothing wrong with showcasing new music. And the BBC showcase it very well, as you have highlighted. It was intended to be an ode to ibiza playing classic tracks in a different format, reaching a wider audience. It ticked all the boxes it was supposed to.

It was as described. I'm sure you could have made the assumption you would dislike it from the synopsis.

Of course the track selection was obvious, clichéd and suitable to fill a Ministry of Sound compilation. But it was a guilty pleasure.

Enjoy it for what it is, or don't watch at all. Those are the options I'd say.

If that's what you want, fine.

I just think that whole anthem thing is very, very tired

One day people will realise what easy money tong has been making all these years. For those that know, I believe Tim Sheridan has a word or two to say about him...

is it what I want from a week-in, week-out clubbing experience in 2015? of course, no.

But to nostalgically fill a hour or so midweek. Yeah, why not! :D

Most of those tracks proceed my clubbing days, but they soundtracked my youth nevertheless.

Tong is great ambassador for electronic music at gateway entry. He isn't the bastion of the underground. (I'm not sure he's ever claimed to be?)
He has cultural significance within the scene, and it's probably unrivalled in terms of audience over the years.

I was there on Wednesday and thought it was great. The atmosphere was fantastic, real mixture of young and old all cheering as they together recognised their favourite tunes.

This was a celebration of 20 years in Ibiza, a retrospective of the biggest hits that have crossed over in that time. It wasn't supposed to be a Brandt Brauer Frick gig but a great big party with a Proms twist on old favourites. I struggle to see how you could think seeing a full orchestra playing Café Del Mar or Strings Of Life was kak. Seeing and hearing all those violins together was anything but.

That ^ was in response to ikoda.

In response to White Isle > i agree with your points about Tong, but i think he's a cancer in dance music. He supported SHM week after week and helped to spawn the EDM monster. He is the enemy.

Pablo you might want to look into what the ethos of the Proms is all about and why Tongy felt necessary to give electronic music it's place there. As a man of the World I would expect you to know this. Then again I sense a hidden agenda against the BBC in your argument o_O

I like the bit of the proms thing I heard. As a licence payer, I did wonder, listening to Radio One this morning, whether Ushuaia are hiring their venue to the BBC for their do (tonight?). Listening to it being namechecked constantly, I wondered whether the payment should be going the other way?

dude - i was getting down to Energy 52 when you were still playing with conkers. I loved all that shit. At the time.
Wow...this is a bit negative! As has been mentioned on here already, it was a celebration of 20 years of Radio 1 in Ibiza. Simple as that. Not forward thinking or pushing new music, just a celebration. It was a one-off event...I was there on Wednesday and loved it.

To call it kak? You obviously don't like dance music...

opinions people, its all about opinions.

I personally thought the electronic proms thing was great. was good to see some dance culture represented as what is a fairly big deal in the wider cultural calender. Yes, the tunes were not cutting edge but they did represent this whole Ibiza 20 that Radio One are doing this weekend and that was what it was meant to do.

On Tong - he is marmite. Always divides opinion. What cant be argued is that he was hugely important in pushing the scene years ago (the R1 show, Essential Mix etc etc). What is more open to debate is how relevant he is now...
