Ibiza - I am too late?? :)

I am going on "my last official lads holiday" this year to Ibiza
I am already thinking of how the hell I am gonna get out there again in the future(I am going with the kids in aug-sept though) and long term I want to live there, we all have dreams :D
The beauty, the vibe, the people all seem to have a hold over me like no other place I have been. I think of Ibiza every day and have done since my first trip in 2008.
The world changes all the time and it seems Ibiza is no exception but it also looks like a new Ibiza is being built with the daytime parties starting up in a new fashion around the island and if this festival is a hit it may well come back again and again which would be testimant to its diversity at a time when the authorities want less of times gone by with space carry on etc all gone now.
"You can't miss what you never had" was said to me when I voiced the exact same concern as you did and it is so true asw hen you get there and experience how good it is, it almost doesn't matter as you have such a good time anyway.
8 weeks and 2 days for me and I will be back to heaven 8) Unless my numbers come in on the lottery and then it would be sooner :p

^^ Turn off the sound and it's a bit like a montage from a '60s French farce.. how delightful :p

Betty - as pretty much everyone agrees, it's never too late to fall in love with Ibiza. Got to be honest though and say that going in August, it can be hard to see the best of it for the crowds at times and it's worthwhile planning a bit if you can to see more than just the main resorts.

Club-wise, my honest advice would be to go up to Aura one night and to stay on to closing (about 4am). Not sure about what's on this year yet - they had Nightmares of Wax, Ernesto Altes and Antz as regulars last year. It's a smaller intimate dancefloor, gets busier after dinner (round 1.30am) but is a much more authentic vibe with friendly people (more mature crowd) and good, real music, far more reminiscent of the 'old Ibiza' than most places.

Also, lots of the beach bars have pre- or after-parties with dancing on a wooden dancefloor on the sand or on the beach (Bora Bora is having a refit so we'll see what it's like this year but last 2 years in August it was pretty drink-fuelled and lacking in atmosphere). Sands and La Plage de l'Elephant in Playa d'en Bossa had the best parties last year (imho).

As far as the big clubs are concerned, in August it's going to be sardine-can time - and there is of course a considerably younger crowd on the island that time of year. I find it very tough to enjoy them now when they're so full (am still on the 'right' side of 40) ... but in fairness that's perhaps not so much an age thing as a long-standing aversion to dancefloors where there's no space to dance and mild claustrophobia. The big clubs are usually much 'better' (less packed) in June/early July or later in the Season. So you might need to stand back and use some imagination if your first exposure to them is a jam packed-out night at Amnesia or Space ! However, they still pack a real punch as far as making an impression.

My other advice would be to get away from Ibiza Town, Playa d'en Bossa and San Antonio in the daytime, and at the very least get out to a quieter beach or two on the West coast or in the North if you are happy to drive a car. If you can, walk a bit along the coast away from the main roads. Distances are not a problem (20-50 minutes to get most places). It's only by getting out to these parts that the sheer beauty of Ibiza really hits you.

Most people I've ever been with / taken to choice places in these areas, even devoted seasoned clubbers tempted from their daybed, reckon the impression / draw of those experiences is at least as strong as the nightlife and perhaps, in the long run, even more so. You simply feel you're in another world - one which gets you right in the heart. Despite all the coastal development there are still very beautiful and unspoiled parts of Ibiza with relatively few tourists even in August.

The smells and sounds of a Northern pine forest opening out onto amazing views of the sea on a hot Summer's day are so vivid they literally stop you in your tracks. I do still get excited by the amazing nightlife, music and dancing in Season - and inevitably end up partying every night in Summer till at least 4am - but it's the beauty of those other parts of the island in the daytime I take comfort in the thought of, and long for, on a grey Winter's day in Britain :).

Thanks Kimajy, great advice, and I am really going to try my hardest to get out of the main resorts, having travelled round the world back in 2006 I like to explore, so we are hoping to hire a car, at least for a day or two....my only problem is my mental state, lol, I like to party and I'm hoping that that im not too trashed/weak to actually get out there! Although im sure the sunshine will help me recover in no time at all.

Sardine packed clubs are going to be a bummer, and due to my job I have to go in summer holidays, so I suppose im never going to escape that but i'll keep a look out for this aura place, sounds like a little gem :)

Just get on with it, you are hardly old.

What a refreshingly good thread and @ Stephen cheers for bringing up the newspaper article by Irma Kurtze having never read it before but after just finished reading it I fully appreciate what this Woman wrote back then.

I first arrived on Ibiza back in the late 70's when Disco was the norm and Stars on 45 was being played everywhere on the Island. I can remember being invited by a mixed group of Old/ Young hippy friends (ofwhich one was the Grandson of the late Terry Thomas) to watch Santana play live in August 1981. During this time I also remember on numerous occasions seeing the actor driving around St Eulalia in a yellow painted rolls royce:oops:. Back then our journey from Es Cana to Ibiza town took the best part of a morning using the then Old 'sweat box' buses ofwhich the Smell eminating from everyone onboard was well unbearable:lol:

Ofcourse since those heady days back then Ibiza has changed not only for it's Club's & music but also it's landscape & wealthy Clientel non ofwhich today really appeal to me. However what does appeal to me is the very fact that Ibiza despite it's drastic changes over the past twenty years or so still holds a desire that say's I must return. The Wife, well she can't stand todays modern Ibiza but although I've no plans on returning this year I'd like to think I'll still be around for one final visit, before my lights are switched off. Afterall

"IBIZA IS AN ISLAND MADE FOR DREAMS" so hope you enjoy them:)

I bet you have some right stories to tell Dave...

Sometimes easier said than done, I went out on last Sunday and it took me all week to recover, haha...but yeah i'll stop whinging, ive not got a zimmer yet :p

Don't worry. You'll have no problems lasting the pace in Ibiza. It's one of the island's little miracles. I think it's the sun and the sea air off the Med. One dip in the pool and you'll be ready to go again.

Also don't worry about going in August either. I for years said that going in August would be a bad idea. Too hot, too crowded etc. Ended up going in August last year and it didn't cross my mind once that it was any busier or any hotter than when I'd been before. Haven't been in a club where it was a ridiculous Sardines situation since my first trip to Cream Amnesia in 05. And even that made for an atmosphere I'll never forget.

Correct

If you look at pictures of ku in the 80s it is full of beautiful/rich/extravagant/trendy people. To the people of the 70s those lot and their DuranDurans and Grace Jones's were probably our VIP saddos and DAvid Guettas yet for us to look at those pics of ku it looks amazing we want to be there. In 25 years time people will look at old pix of Ushuaia and think how retro it looks and how all the people had more fun back in the day

Gotta love the sunshine, a miracle cure :)

Sweeeeeeeeet, thanks Phil :)

Never too late for Ibiza

Ibiza is AMAZING. It is a magical place and the music is fabulous. There is a great vibe there and you have to ensure you go to the right places that suit you. I would say that Playa D'en Bossa is the best place to stay.

Hardly. This is Grace we're talking about.

Read my post back . And it's clearly been edited to look like I'm saying something I'm not cos the were has miraculously changed to was :) I love Grace Jones! I was just making a point with regards to how people of the future might feel about now. It may seem unfair to compare grace and guetta but he may be regarded as something different in 30 years time because god only knows what awful sounds will be classed as music by then
