Ibiza - I am too late?? :)

After spending the last month reading the forums and getting myself excited for my first trip to Ibiza in August, I cant help thinking I am too late! Have I missed the proper Ibiza - is it just too commercialised now.

I've watched videos on Youtube in some of the clubs, it seems more people are recording on their phones then actually dancing - what is this all about, you're stood there swaying and recording - put the phone away and get into it!

I do not doubt that I am going to have an amazing time, but I do feel slightly gutted that I did not go 10/15 years ago, when it was more about the music and the charm and less about im going to Ibiza because I think I am cool.

I rant and whinge to my friends about how things are just not the same anymore with the clubbing scene here in the UK, or is that just because im getting older and things are different when your younger, less responsibilites...I suppose thats a whole new conversation.

I guess Ibiza is never going to be what is was - will it get better? will it get worse? will the costs keep spiraling, will the vip areas keep getting bigger, will new laws that keep coming into place keep ruining the experience for clubbers (I was gutted to find out we love space opening times seem to get later and later), will the new generation of youngsters have an appreciation for what Ibiza really was....hmm im rambling now...

I suppose its just life, things never stay the same and I suppose they would be boring if they did ...Betty ☮

I would have loved to have gone to Ibiza 10-15 years ago (unfortunately if I had I wouldnt have had much of an idea about anything fun!). The way I see it is, there are still people now getting to an age where they can enjoy Ibiza and who are passionate about the island, the music and the general experience. Like all things in life, it will probably still get more commercial in certain areas, such as the west end, but there will also still be pockets of the 'old' magic you speak about in other areas of the island.

If I was you, I probably would regret not going all those years ago, but I wouldnt let that ruin what is bound to be an amazing experience now.

Ibiza has changed quite a bit since my first visit in 2004 but I still enjoy it just as much, I'm gutted about the lack of day clubbing but I just do other things now instead. I enjoy the music every year and I've not had 2 nights ever be the same. There is so much choice it's unreal

Ibiza has changed over the years, but the joy of music is still there. If you look at house music it has a wise audience but there are still house track that come out every year that are great! The Ibiza experience is still unmatched any where else in the world.

You've had the full spectrum then kj *jealous* hehe

No you are not too late! I first went in 1995, now I am nearly 40 (and my other half is much older :)) and still loving it. Yes every year things change, one of my favourite things in the world used to be Space on a Saturday morning - aahhh the days and now you can't do that any more. The way I look at it you can either moan about it (which some people do), or just get on with it and enjoy the island for all it has to offer in new ways. We have been going every year - sometimes twice a year now and still are discovering new places/people/favourite things/amazing things. I am starting to question myself now tho - will I be doing this forever? At what age will it be unacceptable for me to go out dancing, but in Ibiza I don't think that will ever happen. If you want to dance and listen to quality house music rather than go to something that is seen as cool to go to (that will be rammed therefore you can't dance!) then look on the forums there are loads of helpful spotlighters to help you choose your nights/clubs etc. depending on what sort of music you like.
For example last year.............one of my fave moments was walking down the beach in PdBossa, then having to stop and dance in the sea outside of this wooden hut/cafe thing (by La Plage) to 'man with the red face', with live saxophone and literally about 10 of us randoms all enjoying that one moment in time! - and it was FREE, and it wasn't crowded! You will have a ball! 8)

:) Priceless, great tune, its moments like these that you really remember (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJkoBH68njQ

Love your outlook too, I sort of thought I would grow out of the whole 'clubbing' thing, I guess im not there yet, or ready to give it up, and after Ibiza this summer...well...hehe :)

Are you going this year? (silly question!)

yes - usually we go July/August but this year going in June for some openings and a change! Have fun! And as for grow out of it.... not as long as they keep playing house music - there are a whole generation of us oldies out there still loving the tunes! ;)

40 and been going for as long as I remember.

Yup, Ibiza of old had a lot of amazing things and was a lot less commercial. Having said that, I wouldn't still be going back every year if it wasn't decent anymore.

Last year for my 40th was one of the best couple of days I have ever had!

Fiesta en s'arenal on the Saturday night (free beach party in San Antonio), Pikes for Sunday Lunch, Hearts v Hibs in the Highlander bar late Sunday afternoon, We Love @ Space (where I was blown away by Dimitri from Paris and Ralph Lawson), followed by a Monday session on the sauce at Itaca, dinner at Davids and then my bed! Very messy couple of days!

Don't worry, Ibiza is still special!

brilliant post!!

I can push the age envelope out even further. I'm in my early 50s and first went 10 years ago. I thought I'd be too old having turned 40 and that is was too late but not at all. I was worried that people in clubs would take the p155 but I've always been welcomed by other clubbers and seem to get treated with a bit more respect by staff.

It does change every year, though I think it's be boring if it didn't which is part of why I go back every year. The costs may have gone up, but core holiday prices are pretty good and you can self cater or even eat out pretty cheaply. Club prices are often silly but for me, there aren't many nights (other than AVB or possibly Tiesto) that justify the expense. There's still good music and value to be had at pre-parties though. The music scene (for me, at least) is not quite as good as it was when I first went, but I'm happy that I managed to catch the peak/end of the trance era - my only regret is that I didn't go in the mid 90s.

Into more of the chill-out vibe these days and will happily spend all evening at Kumharas sipping sangria and swaying gently......

will the costs keep spiraling

In my view, generally costs have not been spiraling and if anything have remained flat/fallen. From my experience (discounting the fact that due to me being more than a student and being in a position to afford decent accommodation) prices have been relatively stable over even the last 10 years. There have been occasional 1Euro increases here and there a year for drinks in clubs but not really "spiraling", inflation at a push. Club prices are relatively stable (other than the likes of Guetta at Pacha) - I recall paying about the same for Space opening 15 years ago as now. Accommodation prices are relatively stable, in line with most European destinations.

So, in my view costs are not spiraling, (although they may have begun at a higher base).

To be honest, when I booked this year I think exactly the same as you.. ;)

But all things change, it's just the way of life. It's up to yourself to make the best of it! I'm in my late 20's now and was also thinking, why didn't I go like 6-7 years ago, but when seeing comments above I think it's still worth going.

When I went to Time Warp this year, people also tolded me that the true techno/rave spirit isn't there and so on... But look I was in excellent company and I've had one of the best party alltime. At some party I also see people taking video's with the phone etc, but that's just the way it goes now. I'm not bothered by it, for me it's just about the music & the feeling & if they want to spent there time for some vids it's there problem. Time is precious no matter how u put it, so u better enjoy it as long as you can! ;)

Btw when/where are u going in august?

Ibiza is still the place to be for EDM,but i'm happy to have knew the island in 1994,these years were totally crazy, underground, and i never found this since the early 2000's...
thanks god for made me dancing on the space terrasse on sundays(morning) at this time, thanks for the free trance parties in the north(can punta,Portinatx lighthouse),the island was more for insiders...
But things change everywhere, times are changing, and this is not specially in Ibiza,it's everywhere...
Now i go in Ibiza for differents reasons, others pleasures(still partying once or twice every summer),and i will go next year, and the year after,etc...and i will go on the island up i could live here...
