Noted that at passport they had about 8 of what looked like those new biometric things under wraps, just before the passport queue. How are they gonna manage next summer, have visitors queuing on the tarmac, as it's all new and confusing it's gonna take ages even if things are smooth?

Meanwhile so much for EU security, my passport photo failed the e-gate test, wouldn't accept my face (don't blame it) so got the flashing red light, blaring horns etc (I exaggerate) but the assistant let me through without a glance.

The photos 8 yes old and my face structure changed slightly after an op to remove part of my back gum. But even though the gate didn't let me through, she did without looking. Could have used my dad's old passport, that's still in date even though he's passed away now!

I am curious how the passport check works for non-Schengen departures.

It seems there is no separate non-Schengen departure area. Is there a passport check on departure at all if flying to the UK?

These new gates are a joke honestly... I expect summer 2025 to be a mess. As for queues, I think there might be long ones since not everyone knows what to do. Hopefully, the staff will manage.
and those gates often fail. I had a similar issue - new passport but system still didn't recognize me. Also had to get help from an assistant.

The new EES and ETIAS has been put back yet again. Won't start till 2025 and unless in late winter (doubtful) I can't see them starting over Easter or summer, just would be chaos.
Think the whole system is way too big and only needs one small part to break down and it takes everything with it
If the UK was removed that would free up space and time to bring it in for the rest of the world, as I'm sure the UK provided more EU entrants than any other country?

Some interesting news; looks like the new EES is gonna be watered down a little, instead of requiring both fingerprints and facial scan, looks like only one will be necessary, a facial scan. Also probably won't happen before October this year at the earliest.

If we are processed by - at first - shoving our passport into the reader and it capturing a selfie, and they both match, then in future we shouldn't need to show our passport, just smile at the camera, it recognises us, and through we go, all logged in. And out of course!

That really would speed up the process and possibly make it quicker than pre-Brexit days, however there would have to be at least two lanes for Brits, those that have been done, and those that haven't and need processing.

We're in Tenerife this week and they are already taking a fingerprint + face scan. Added very little time to be honest over no fingerprint.

Definitely a lot quicker than the US if you've ever done that.

Glad to read that! It is off-peak but I suppose if anywhere's gonna be busy it's the Canaries. One other good thing is that going to Ibiza the vast majority of flights will be from Schengen countries, so only really the British flights will need protocols, it's not as if every single flight from outside Spain has to be done.

Be much better though if we joined Schengen...
