Higher rate tax is feckin annoying, when you include NI as well you end up paying half of what you earn to the government so they can pay it out to some pikey 12 year old mother

I remember when that neo-fascist Steve Forbes was running for president of the US in the 1990s (almost gave Bush Sr. a run for the Republican nomination, if I remember correctly), he made the flat tax the basis of his campaign. As a person instilled with ideals of fairness and concern for those less fortunate and all that, I thought the idea was an abomination. How you could you not charge more to people who make more money!?
After spending 4 years in a country with a flat tax, I have to say that it is DEFINITELY the way to go. 13% across the board. Few deductions. Simplicity, and beautiful for it.
Only the tax accountants would be upset in the end.
