I don't quite understand the comments of loving the island but only venturing out of the hotel complex once.
Surely you could just go anywhere then as long as the sun is shinning and the price stacks up??

Part of the point of AI though is knowing you have all your meals and such sorted and ready for more or less where you want them.
Alot of people (families especially) choose a specific resort based on whats within that resort, so they dont have to venture to far - with kids, going any more than a 100 yards is a nightmare!
I guess those without kids are the more inclined to be able to... let alone just want to, venure elsewhere.
But its the families that appriciate that sense of security in having everything they need and want around them, without having to look for it.

Unless you've got kids (see Tres Esquinas' explanation above), it should be illegal not to go out and try Ibiza's great restaurants at least once per day

One of my biggest regrets with regard to Ibiza really is not exploring more of the island when I didnt have kids...
Sure, when the kids are a bit older we wont be so limited and there are plenty of things to do, but for now were quite confined to staying within the resort ... still WE ARE IN IBIZA!!! I challenge any ibiza lover to reject a holiday in Ibiza where they have to stay in the resort alone

if you are staying in a resort like pdb AI is definitely a good idea as drinks in bars aren't exactly cheap. Why pay 5 euro a beer or 7-10 euro a vodka in a bar when you can eat and drink as much as you want for nothing. AI is a godsend at night before going to clubs. Bar owners should drop their prices if they want more business.

i was there for the opening parties and we had no problem drinking on the rocks... I actually stood right beside the sign having a beer ( i'd forgotten it was there at this stage ) and no-one said a thing....
about an hour later as we had moved slightly further down toward Mint ( stil on the rocks though ) a Mambo employee said it was fine as long as we kept our empty bottles ( which we were already doing ) but as we were leaving he was getting an ear-bashing from his boss for letting people sit about with their own drinks...
like a lot of things in the world nowadays the whole thing boils down to one thing unfortunately...

I agree rubbish should be removed by the user on any beach or rocks if watching a sunset. Those that don't deserve a fine. But I still think it is wrong to ban a tradition that has been going on for decades, bit of common sense i.e more bins and maybe higher tax on the likes of Mambo's who make so much coin to pay for cleaners. Not like they can't afford it

Seems ok to buy cans from the nearest Spar and drink them wherever you like. I think as a general rule in Ibiza: so long as you look happy and civilised then nobody really bothers you

Ive not had a problem drinking my own drinks at any point over the last few months 
In terms of San An, the up until mid-june it seemed from a workers point of view a lot quieter. There was also a stupidly high number of 'workers' hanging around, but thankfully most have filtered off home now. It's definitely in full swing now.

It seems that San An is relatively quiet in comparison to Playa Den Bossa which seemed to be thriving each time I have visited so far.
Im unsure whether that is the norm during this time.
What I have noticed though, is a crap load of ticket sellers on the pavements and promoters trying to lure you into venues on the west end. I really feel sorry for these poor kids as they are trying so hard. It's not an easy job. It is also frustrating to walk through these areas. I tend to avoid them as I don't want to get harassed every few seconds.
It definitely feels like there are more workers than tourists in San An at the moment.

On 13th June san an was packed. West end was rammed. The sunset strip wasn't packed but the pussy cat bar and then the next night bay bar to the egg were all busier then I've seen them in august.
Pdb was dead. Most bars had no one in them.
You are right, Earlier in June San an was definitely packed. But it just feels like its been getting quieter. Ive been here a few months now and it seems to be the quietest it has been so far.
West end is always fairly busy though. I generally mean the overall population isn't as busy as i thought it would be.
It's only early days. Im sure mid July it will be bursting at the seams here.
I've just returned from San Antonio and it was the quietest I have known it at this time of year. There are reasons for this:
The general European recession;
Italy being badly hit and I am told that numbers of Italian visitors to Ibiza are significantly down;
a rise in popularity of the Greek party resorts;
A rise in popularity of playa d'en bossa;
Rising airfare costs which put off people who previously spent a few nights in San an's hostels etc;
The attitude of San Antonio now with it's obsession with petty local by-laws.
After 13 years and multiple more times going to Ibiza I have to say it is losing it's charm. Getting too 'regulated' and pricey. Me and mates are off to Greece in august and September...

I only ventured out once as it was my first holiday with my son, Tres Esquinas' hit the nail on the head with his post on families and AI. And i totally agree with morbyd if you don't have kids don't stay AI get out and explore the island before you do have kids lol.
Savannah for there burgers and pizza minimal in the bay where two of my must do's on a holiday.

San An appears to want to have it's cake and eat it on it's own terms, and i think it will suffer badly from it in the next few years. Unless the politicians chill out and the bars and promoters realize you will get more people through your doors and sell more drinks if the prices are reasonable priced.

I was actually surprised at how busy it was, but if you take the Euro's being on in so many of the bars it's no wonder it was busy
I have been in August a few years ago when the west end was dead! Never seen PDB as dead as it was this year though, way too many ticket and drug pushers especially the del boys evry 10 seconds asking me to buy drugs

Wound up in that area yesterday at sunset, not by design, and went to have a look. No enforcement of Mambo drinks rule going on. However, there were so many security guys outside and inside of the place that it genuinely felt like riot police on red alert. So oppressive - atmosphere charged and a really non-conjucive vibe. Defo won't be going back. Perhaps Laidback Luke & Fatboy Slim needed more bouncers present, I don't know, but after the sun went down the music sounded like any old West End bar. I fled the scene sharpish !
Your observations are exactly how I feel every time I walk past.
Security guards there have a real attitude problem. They are on a massive power trip.
They haven't done anything to me but their stares and the way they stand around patrolling, its just pathetic.
They ruin the vibe for me so Im not going back. There are many other beautiful places to watch the sunset anyway.
Totally agree that Mambo has lost it's magic atmosphere at sunset etc, Even Dj's that play there don't play music to suit the location and the time of the day, this has all changed in the past few years, certainly wasn't like this when i first went 5 years ago! I listened to sebastian ingrosso on friday, and it was as if he was trying to cram as many hits as possible into his short mambo set!

Well, firstly, you're not drinking for free. The cost of your drinks is built in to your hotel rate.
Secondly, there are plenty of cheap bars in PdB. Kopi is a frequent stop for me for a drink or two pre-party. Drinks cost about half of the prices you quoted.
