ONE STEP BEYOND: the story of Carlisle United~Chas Smash~APNEEF and a Big Box of Toys

ONE STEP BEYOND FOR APNEEF

CARLISLE UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB, CHAS SMASH AND A GIANT TOY BOX BRING SMILES TO THE ISLANDS SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN

The day that Stephen Dunn, Stadium Announcer for Carlise United and loyal fan of British Ska band Madness, first came up with the idea to use his favourite band’s song at the team’s League 1 matches, he could never have imagined that his dream really would go that more than just the ‘One Step Beyond’.

After having approached Cathal Smyth aka Madness frontman Chas Smash to ask for his collaboration for Carlisle’s League 1 matches, Dunn was delighted when Smyth not only agreed to record the voiceover for the football stadium but also insisted that in lieu of a fee the club make a donation to the Ibiza and Formentera Association for Children with Special Needs(APNEEF).

Stephen explained: "We were using the Madness track One Step Beyond for the players to run out to anyway, and I made contact with an agent who knew Chas who then said that he would let him know what we were up to.
"That very quickly became a request for Chas to re-record the opening sequence of lyrics for us, to make it specific to Carlisle United. Unbelievably he agreed without hesitation. By the time we got in to October the track had already arrived at Brunton Park, and we were able to start using it."
Smyth, currently a permanent resident in Ibiza, first became aware of the plight of the 100 mentally and physically disabled island childen through his involvement with annual charity fundraiser, the Butterfly Ball, having performed an exclusive acoustic set there in October 2008.

His petition for a donation from Carlisle United was more than welcomed by APNEEF, who saw the results of Smyth’s toil this week with the arrival of a giant toy box straight from Carlisle United. Games, educational aids, remote control fire engines, teddy bears and Carlisle United football kits were distributed to the APNEEF children during one of their workshops in the Can Raspalls College in San Jordi and the 30kgs of happiness donated by the fans and players of Carlisle United were happily received by the kids in question.
President of APNEEF, Carmen Boned said: "We'd like to take this opportunity to express our thanks and appreciation from all of the parents and children of APNEEF to a specific number of individuals who have outdone themselves with recent efforts to support our cause.

"As President of APNEEF, I speak on behalf of all of our 101 special needs children and their families when I say that we feel blessed to have the support of so many generous individuals.

"From volunteers to sponsors and those who donate, together every single person has helped make a positive difference to our cause. Whilst it would be impossible for me to name every one of those involved, at this point I must especially thank Mr Cathal Smyth (aka Chas Smash) of Madness. Not only did he perform at one of our charity events, he has also been the catalyst behind the collaboration of Carlisle United Football Club, and in particular, we’d also like to thank Mr Stephen Dunn, for his fundraising efforts for APNEEF.

"We can only thank them and the people of Carlisle for all their kindness and efforts and, of course, their wonderful package of games for our children. We look forward to strengthening the bond between us over time."

Meanwhile, organisers of The Butterfly Ball, took the opportunity to simultaneously hand over a cheque to the value of 4000€ , raised at the event in October of 2008.

In Smyth's own words, a great chance, on both counts, to "help the children, help our future".
