Going to Amsterdam with GF. Recommend places to stay?

My girlfriend and I have just booked our flight tickets to Amsterdam for March to celebrate her birthday.

We will be looking to stay in a central location where we can do a bit of shopping, a bit of night life and have access to the sights of the red light district and sex shows!

Having been my first time to the 'dam' can anyone recommend some decent accomodation to stay that would be suitable for a couple enjoying a good weekend away?

Preferably somewhere central so travel using taxis etc can be limited.

Would appreciate some recommendations!

just walk down one of the canal streets and do a spot of "window" shopping.

just stay clear of kalver straat, its like an oridinary shopping road with boring shops you´ll find anywhere!

Amsterdam centre is very compact, you can walk everywhere.
