Formentera – bicycle hire and best routes??

Does anyone know names or websites for bicycle hire in Formentera? We’ll be going there with a toddler and would like to cycle to the BlueBar in Illetes, and other great parts of the island …. We are not really sport people; would that be too much for us, is that a long distance away?

Also any comments on road safety, and most scenic and safest routes (we are not that fit, so not too far!!) would be appreciated. We are basically after paradise-deserted beaches (will probably be taking a little picnic with us), amazing scenery and would also like to see that famous BlueBar…

Thanks in advance

Flor,

Your best option is google it or look at paginas-amarillas.es

Formentera roads are imo safe, there's not too many cars and peopel is used to bikes and motorbikes.

Remember to take the ferry at Ibiza port, cos the other one I think it drops you at Illetes. THis ferry will drop you at La Savina, as you see in this map there are just a main road from La Savina to La Mola.
Your best choice would be Illetes. Blue Bar is at Migjorn

I’m a bit confused… should we get the ferry to Illetes or La Savina? We will be based at S’Argamassa near Es Cana, what would be our best bet to get to Formentera?

We would prefer to avoid main roads as much possible (will be safer that way ?), are there any other routes apart from the main roads on the map?

Thanks a lot for your help

(cannot see Illetes on the map … am I missing something?!)

You are true:
Flor you should get the ferry at Ibiza Harbour cos it's the one that drops you at La Savina.
There's no other roads, only "caminos de tierra aptos para bicis, coches, motos".
Here's a map with the beaches names:

Gracias Silvia!!

Have you heard about Cala Sahona? It's supposed to be really nice little beach ... is it easy to get there by cycle?

Any other sandy beaches worth visiting? They will need to be baby friendly (i.e. sandy, shallow water etc etc). We'll be taking our own shade/food so no chiringuitos there is not an issue for us (will also be taking shade ... sombrilla)

Gracias!

Haven't been to Cala Saona myself, but every single inch of beach in Formentera is well worth the visit.

I can't help with the children friendly thing, I've never looked those beaches with a mommy eyes, sorry ;)

We went on the ferry from Figeuretas/PDB which stops at Illetes before going into La Savina.

There are plenty of bikes for hire around the harbour and we had no difficulty cycling up to San Fran and then to Mijhorn. We cycled back via the northern route around the salt pans. A splendid day!

By the way, the photos are not mine, I found them using Google search.

Have a great holiday - 18 days to go for me!!.

Thanks Thorne!! Did you notices whether the cycle hire places had also seats for the bikes for children?? Also, the route you describe sounds great … did you take the main road or the little roads I can see in the map? Does it get busy with cars etc?

Also, seeing as you know the island so well, can you advise on any child-friendly beaches (i.e. no rocks and shallow water) to visit? I really likes the pictures for Es Cavall and Mitjorn …. Are they ok for kids??

Thanks for your help!

Sorry, don't know the situation with child seats on bikes. If there are none available perhaps you could take a taxi or bus to the beaches. I remember being told that the island tour bus would drop you off at any beach and pick you up later in time to get your return ferry.

The road up to San Fran was the main road but there is a good sized cycle lane between the road and the kerb. There's not a lot of traffic about anyway.

I think I mentioned earlier, the ferry from Figueretas/PBD drops off at Illetes before going into the harbour. We are going to see if we can get the small ferry from La Savine to Espalmador this year - it looks a fantastic place to spend a day.

Mijhorn beach was very good, there was some broken seaweed about but that isn't a real problem. The water was very clean & clear and the sand was fine. I think children would really like it. Pick a place near a bar so there is somewhere to buy drinks etc

Formentera - child seats

Just back from 2 weeks in Ibiza. Have confirmed that you can hire bikes with child seats on Formentera - there were quite a few available.
