Flooding

But you presumably accept that in a disaster situation the reason you need a gun and ammo is because everyone else has, or may have, one?

If I get flooded I'll need sandbags and food/water and in extreme conditions a dinghy. I won't need a gun because my neighbours don't have them.

Buckley:

First of all in a disaster situation (or in any situation) if everyone were armed then the forebrain (the thinking part of the human brain) will think twice before assaulting another armed person. The rule of law does not apply to the crooks, but the rule of survival does.

If you were Buckley the Buster how comfortable will you feel preying on anybody if you were unsure if your prey is armed. Similarly, if your neighbors are unarmed, and you are armed, and they are UNSURE of the fact that if they come to Bucklington Palace with intent to do to harm Uncle Buckley or any of your loved ones they will see the front end of Uncle Buckley's 12 gauge then they will think twice. In both cases, when the rule of law has been compromised, the rule of retaliatory force acts as a deterrant. As I said earlier, the pen is mightier than the sword... till a sword is needed. Dr. John Lott wrote a great book on More Guns Less Crime, but that is a discussion outside the topic on hand.

You have to see the firearm as a tool in the use of force continuum, and not an evil that the media makes it out to be. In very simple terms, the tools used within the force continuum start with Verbal commands followed by Pepper Spray, then Empty Hand, then Impact Tools and then Firearms. That is it. A firearm is simply a tool. In some ways, it is just like using various forms of contraception for controlling the birth rate. You can start off with Verbal (abstinence), then use a condoms and birth control pills, and finally surgical means.

Finally, one thing is sure, the firearm does not compensate for stupidity. All the firearms in the world will not help if the mindset is not there.

Padster:

I hope life gets back to normal for you and millions of others very soon.

I am SURE that no-one in close proximity of Buckley Towers has a gun. I know people a little farther a field that do.

In an extreme circumstance of being under attack there are more than enough things in my house that I can use to protect myself and mine.

The problem you have is there's no turning back. Pandora's box is open and the guns are out there. If you made them illegal people aren't going to just hand them in. If I lived somewhere everyone might have a gun, I'd need one. I'm very pleased that isn't my current situation.

Now that we know you have Ralph the Grizzly, I for one wont be turning up at Buster Buckley Towers looking to relieve you of your possessions....

You can sleep safe in that knowledge..... 8)

Jesus Christ! We're not living in the middle of the outback, we're a civilised country, we're not going to have to go out and hunt our food!! 8O

The scale of the floods here are nowhere near as bad as Hurricane Katrina aftermath, that was hundreds of thousands of people made homeless, living in squalid conditions, with hundreds of deaths.

To compare owning a gun as a necessity such as having food, or light, is absurd in our civilisation. You need food and light to live, guns just have the opposite effect.

And like someone said earlier in this post - guns are ILLEGAL in Britain. We don't just go around shooting people or animals the minute life gets hard

I think it's tragic that in some parts of America, having a gun, a tool whose one purpose is of maiming or killing someone, is the "norm". Crazy fools.

Quite a few of my workmates who live in abingdon (near oxford) have been flooded or have have to walk through floods to get to work..

luckily I'm completely fine!

hope things stop smelling for you Sez!

The rudest man I ever met was from Abingdon. He was 'affectionately' known as BIFFA (Big Ignorant F****r From Abingdon).

That is all.

This went off track somewhere :spank:. I hope everyone is doing fine effected by the floods. To all every American is not a gun nut and civil unrest is not peeking around the corner, but I would corner the market on good red wine and good olives if I was in a flood.:lol:

Agreed! I have friends in Tewkesbury who are completely cut off, friends in Gloucester with no running water (tho apparently the power came back on this morning), and we have no running water here in Cheltenham. I'm currently using bottled water to wash and clean my teeth BUT that novelty wore thin reeeaaaaally quickly:evil:

As bad as we think we've had it I feel so sorry for you guys with no power/water.
I'm gutted the only part of Botley that hasn't flooded is where I work.
I did buy a 2lt bottle of water on Monday "just in case"!

2 litres! You were really digging in for the long haul weren't you?
